Last spring a mobile mechanic out of Waukee called us about buying his first permanent auto lift after six years of doing brake jobs on jack stands in customer driveways. He was doing eight to twelve rotor-and-pad services a week, mostly half-ton pickups and crossovers, and his knees had finally filed a complaint. He’d rented a bay in a small industrial condo off Hickman and wanted to know which model number actually fit — not which one a website told him was “perfect for any shop.” That question turned into a two-week spec comparison, a concrete core sample, and an install we finished on a Thursday. We’re writing it up here because the process he went through is the same one every Iowa buyer should go through, and almost nobody does.

What the Waukee Shop Was Actually Trying to Solve

The brief he gave us was short: brake service, rotor swaps, occasional suspension work, nothing heavier than a three-quarter-ton pickup. He wanted wheels-free access because the whole job is wheels-off, and he wanted to be able to walk between the columns with a rotor in each hand without turning sideways. That last part sounds trivial. It isn’t. Drive-thru clearance is the single spec that gets ignored most often, and it’s the one people complain about every single day for the next fifteen years.

His bay measured 24 feet deep by 16 feet wide with a 12-foot ceiling and an overhead door header sitting at 10 feet 4 inches. That header immediately mattered. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead crossbar needs somewhere between 11 and 12 feet of ceiling depending on model, and his ceiling technically allowed it — but the crossbar would have sat above the door track, which is fine, while the columns themselves would have crowded the door opening. So the first real decision wasn’t brand. It was configuration: overhead versus baseplate. We walked the bay with a tape measure and a chalk line before anyone talked about price, because on a job like this the building writes half the spec sheet whether you like it or not, and pretending otherwise just means a return freight bill later.

Comparing Model Numbers Instead of Marketing Copy

We put three candidates on paper. A Rotary SPO10 at 10,000 lb, a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric at the same capacity, and a Challenger CL10V3 clearfloor. All three would lift everything he services with capacity to spare. The differences showed up in arm geometry, column spacing, and rise height — the stuff buried on page four of the spec sheet.

The asymmetric configuration rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and uses short front arms and long rear arms, which shifts the vehicle back and lets the doors open past the columns. For a brake tech who’s in and out of the driver’s seat testing pedal feel forty times a day, that’s not a luxury. The symmetric SPO10 puts the vehicle centered between the columns, which balances load beautifully for heavier trucks but means you’re squeezing past a door edge. The Challenger clearfloor gave him the cleanest floor for rolling a jack or a rotor cart straight through, with the hydraulic and equalization lines routed overhead instead of through a floor channel. We printed all three spec sheets, highlighted rise, drive-thru width, overall width, and lowered arm height, and let him circle what he cared about. He circled drive-thru and door clearance. That narrowed it to one.

Why Concrete Decided the Final Auto Lift Spec

Before we ordered anything we cored the slab. This is the step people skip and it’s the one that turns a good install into a bad one. Most two-post manufacturers specify a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of them want 4.25 inches for higher-capacity models. The industrial condo he rented was built in the late 1990s, and the finished floor came in at just under 4 inches in two of the four core locations, with a saw-cut control joint running almost exactly where the passenger-side column wanted to sit.

That gave him two paths. Cut out a section and pour new pads — typically a four-by-four-foot pad per column, 8 to 12 inches deep, with a full cure window of about 28 days before anchoring. Or move the whole layout 30 inches toward the back wall to clear the control joint and use the thicker slab section. He picked the layout shift, which cost him nothing but a Saturday of re-taping the floor, and it saved him a month of downtime plus the concrete bill. That decision is why we insist on a site visit before a quote. You cannot spec an auto lift from a phone call and a photo, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling freight, not equipment. Power, Air, and the Stuff That Shows Up on Install Day

He asked the same question almost every first-time buyer asks: do I need 220V? The honest answer is that you usually want it. Most two-post power units ship as a 208-230V single-phase motor, and while some models offer a 115V option, a 115V unit draws hard on startup, raises slower, and tends to nuisance-trip a shared circuit. His condo already had a 240V outlet on the back wall for a compressor, so his electrician ran a dedicated 20-amp circuit to the column location and mounted a disconnect within sight of the power unit — which is code in most Iowa jurisdictions and just good practice everywhere else.

Air matters too, more than people expect. The lock release on nearly every commercial two-post is air-actuated, and if you don’t have a line at the column you’ll be pulling lock releases by hand every time you lower. We ran a quarter-inch line off his existing drop. Total added cost on both utilities was modest — a few hundred dollars in an electrician’s time and fittings — but sequencing them before the equipment arrived meant we uncrated, set, anchored, plumbed, and tested in one day. Install Day: What Actually Happened

We showed up at 7:30 with the columns, carriage assemblies, arms, power unit, and an anchor kit. Uncrating and staging took about forty minutes. Setting and plumbing the columns took longer than most people expect because plumb matters — a column out of vertical by even a small margin loads the carriage bearings unevenly and you’ll hear about it in a chattering rise within a year. We shim at the base until the level reads true on two axes, then drill.

Anchor drilling into a 1990s slab is a coin flip on rebar. We hit steel on one hole, moved the anchor location within the base plate’s slotted pattern, and re-drilled. That’s normal. Torque spec on the anchors was checked twice, once at set and once after the first full-load cycle, because concrete relaxes slightly under initial load and anchors need re-torquing. We filled and bled the hydraulic system, cycled the carriages up and down four times empty to purge air, then ran a loaded test with his own pickup. Total time on site: about six hours including cleanup and a walkthrough of the daily and monthly inspection points. He was doing a rotor job on it Friday morning. The whole point of a proper auto lift install is that install day is boring — no surprises, no callbacks, no “we’ll have to come back Tuesday.”

The Spec Numbers That Mattered Most in the End

Looking back at the comparison, four numbers drove the decision and everything else was noise. Capacity was the easiest — 10,000 lb against a maximum real-world vehicle weight around 7,000 lb gave him a comfortable margin, and we generally tell people to leave at least 25 percent headroom over their heaviest regular vehicle. Rise height at just under 72 inches let a six-foot tech stand under a rocker panel without a stoop.

Drive-thru clearance came in around 99 inches on the model he chose, wide enough to roll a floor jack and a rotor cart between the columns without a three-point turn. And lowered arm height mattered more than he expected: at roughly 4 inches, the arms slide under a lowered sedan without a ramp, which matters when a customer shows up in something with an aftermarket suspension. Everything else — column color, powder coat, whether the manufacturer’s logo was stamped or stickered — was irrelevant to how the equipment performs. When you’re comparing an auto lift across brands, strip the sheet down to those four numbers plus the concrete requirement and the decision usually makes itself. If it doesn’t, you’re probably choosing between two lifts that would both work fine, and at that point buy the one whose parts you can get in two days instead of two weeks.

What We’d Tell the Next Iowa Buyer

The mobile-to-fixed transition is one of the most common calls we get, and it almost always follows the same shape: someone has proven the business works out of a van and now needs to stop crawling around on asphalt. The temptation at that moment is to buy the cheapest thing that lifts a car, because cash is tight and the equipment feels like an expense rather than a tool. We understand that. We’d still tell you to buy on parts availability and installer support before you buy on sticker.

A cheap import auto lift that goes down in year three and takes six weeks to source a cable or a cylinder costs more in lost bays than the price difference ever saved. Bring us the tape measure numbers, sure, but let somebody put eyes on the slab, the ceiling, the door header, and the panel before money changes hands.
