An RV and trailer service shop in northern Missouri called us about an auto lift last spring — the first one they had ever owned. Why a 10K Two-Post Was the Right First-Year Auto Lift

The owner opened the call asking for a 12,000 lb capacity because he wanted to occasionally lift dually pickups and small Class C chassis. We walked him back to a 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post auto lift for one honest reason: his real day-to-day work was passenger cars, half-ton pickups, and travel trailers pulled off their axles for bearing service. A 12K unit is harder to reach under, needs taller columns, and lands a few thousand higher on the invoice. When two or three genuine heavy jobs a year rolled in, they could rent a set of our mobile columns or use jack stands the old way. A first lift should match your median vehicle, not the outliers. That mindset shift saved them roughly a foot of ceiling clearance they did not have, and it kept their monthly financing payment inside the number the co-owner had drawn on a napkin at the kitchen table one Sunday afternoon.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric: The Arm Choice That Changed Everything

Asymmetric columns are angled about thirty degrees so a passenger car sits back in the bay and the doors clear the columns when they swing open. That geometry is great for a shop seeing Camrys and F-150s all day. Their work skewed heavier and longer, though — pickup chassis, camper conversions, small livestock trailers up on stands. Symmetric columns face straight, arms are equal length, and a symmetric setup handles a balanced heavy load more comfortably. We shipped a versa-symmetric configuration so they could run both. Six months in, the owner told us the versa arms were the single best upsell we pushed on him. Without that flexibility, he would have fought the geometry on every dually and every long-bodied travel trailer. If your work mix is mostly one shape of vehicle, pick to that shape. If your mix is genuinely split — and RV shops usually are — the versa configuration is worth the small premium every single time.

Install Day: What Actually Happened on the Concrete

Their pole building had a four-and-a-quarter-inch pour, tested at just over 3,000 PSI. That is inside spec for a 10K two-post, and we tell every buyer the concrete number before the truck rolls. On install day their local finisher and our tech team laid out the columns using the manufacturer’s template, drilled twelve wedge anchors per side, then plumbed each column with a laser and a four-foot level. The east column needed a thirty-second shim under the base because the pour rose slightly toward the overhead door — normal. Total install time was under a full day for the mechanical and another half day for the electrical drop. The owner ran the first cycle empty three times before the first vehicle went up. That is the sequence we recommend every time: dry cycles first, arm restraint check, safety lock listen, then load.

The First Real Job: Differential Fluid on a Class C

Their first paid job on the new lift was a differential fluid service on a Class C motorhome — Ford E-450 chassis, no options, six-year-old fluid that came out looking like coffee. The auto lift held it comfortably, the versa arms reached in far enough to clear the running boards, and the tech had honest working room around the axle housing for the first time. What they told us afterward was the small thing you never think about until you have the lift in front of you: they could stage two fluid catch pans, a torque wrench, and a fresh case of gear oil right on the floor under the axle without anyone bending double. A cheap pair of work lights clamped to the columns turned the underbody into daylight. That single job convinced the other two techs the investment was worth it.

What Broke in Month Four (And Why It Wasn’t the Lift)

Month four the shop lost pressure on the up-cycle mid-day. Panicked call. We walked them through it in about ten minutes: the air line feeding the power unit had come loose at a compression fitting where someone had bumped it with a floor jack handle. Two dollars in ferrule and a fresh crimp fixed it. The lift itself never actually failed — no cable, no cylinder, no lock issue, no motor. That is the honest reality of a well-installed auto lift: the equipment holds up if you buy the right brand and install it right. What breaks is the peripheral plumbing — air fittings, quick-connects, occasionally a solenoid on the release valve. Owning a small parts kit on the shelf saved them a two-day wait on a fitting Amazon would have overnight-priced anyway. We ship every install with a starter kit for that reason.

Month Twelve Report: What They Would Do Differently

At the one-year mark we sat down with the owner over coffee and asked the honest question: what would you change? Two answers. First, he would have paid for the alignment-ready package from the start, not added it later. Retrofitting alignment turntables and slip plates to a lift that was not spec’d for it is doable but not clean. Second, he would have put the power unit on the opposite column. His overhead door swing conflicted with the standard unit position twice a week. Both are small, both are fixable, and both are the kind of thing you only learn from a year of real work under the lift. When we quote a new customer now, we ask about door swings and future alignment plans before we finalize the configuration. His experience made our checklist better.

Choosing Your Own Auto Lift: The Framework We Use

The framework is short and it works. First, count your median vehicle weight, not your outlier. Second, decide symmetric, asymmetric, or versa based on your genuine work mix — RV and trailer shops usually want versa. Third, verify concrete depth and PSI before the order goes to freight. Fourth, plan the power-unit column against your door swing. Fifth, buy a small starter kit of fittings and lock parts. Sixth, run three empty cycles before your first vehicle.
