Myth: “It Ran Hot Once, So It’s Probably Fine Now”

This is the single most expensive myth in the business, and we’ve watched it play out in real time. A shop calls with a lift that’s been acting up — running rough, a technician notices the motor housing is hot to the touch, maybe there’s a delay before it engages. Someone does some troubleshooting, the lift raises a car a few feet, everyone goes home assuming the problem resolved itself. The next morning the same motor makes a loud hum, smokes within seconds of being switched on, and in some cases keeps smoldering even after the breaker is pulled. Heat that severe means the windings have already started to break down internally; running it again just finishes the job.

The Real Twenty-Year Cost of an Auto Lift Motor

Shops rarely calculate the twenty-year cost of a lift’s electrical components, but they should, especially in a climate like ours where garages swing from humid summers to freezing winters. A quality auto lift motor, properly sized and maintained, can run for a decade or more of commercial use. A poorly matched or undersized one might need replacing every few years, and each replacement costs more than the part itself — it costs the labor to diagnose it, the shipping time waiting on the correct unit, and the lost bay time while a lift sits dead.
