Auto lift cable inspection is one of those topics where European-marque restoration shops in the Quad Cities keep asking us the same questions and hearing the same wrong answers from other suppliers. We install and service lifts across eastern Iowa and western Illinois, and we spend a lot of time in bays that push equipment hard on Porsches, older BMWs, Land Rovers, and Alfas. The three cable myths we hear most often

Myth one: cables only need a look when the lift starts making noise. By the time the sheaves are audible, you are past the inspection window and into a replacement conversation. Myth two: greased cables last forever. Grease sheds contaminants into the strands and traps grit against the sheave; the wrong lubricant is worse than none. Myth three: a broken outer strand or two is cosmetic. On a four-post used to store irreplaceable cars, three broken wires in one lay length is our hard replacement threshold, and we treat two as a warning. When a restoration foreman in Bettendorf tells us he has been running the same cables for eleven years on a heavily used four-post, we do not congratulate him. We schedule the inspection. The whole point of a good auto lift cable program is catching wear early enough that you never surprise anyone in the shop.

When cables actually fail

Cables almost never fail from load. They fail from bending fatigue at the sheaves, from side loading when a car is parked off-center for years at a time, and from corrosion when a lift lives in a damp corner. Restoration shops are more exposed than most because vehicles sit on the lift for weeks. Static side load on a stored car pulls a cable across the sheave at the same spot every day, and that concentrated bending is what shortens cable life more than any single heavy job. We have pulled cables off Quad Cities four-posts where the internal wires under the outer jacket were half rust and half fatigue crack, while the outside looked passable. That is the case for taking cables off the sheaves during an inspection, not just running them through your hand. The auto lift industry standard is a real hands-on look at least once a year on a shop that stores vehicles.

The real inspection interval for a busy shop

Every twelve months for a stored-vehicle shop is our baseline. Every six months if the shop is near a wash bay, near a media blaster, or in a building that heats and cools sharply through Iowa winters. Daily driver bays that only park cars during service can go a full year comfortably. We build a written record for every customer with the date, the lift serial, the cable lot, and the condition. Restoration shops love that paperwork because insurance carriers ask for it after a claim on any auto lift in the shop. Do not confuse the ANSI/ALI annual inspection with a cable-specific look. The ALI inspection covers the whole lift, but the cables get a closer read when we are focused on them alone. If you have never had a dedicated cable inspection on an auto lift older than five years, book one before your next major project rolls onto the ramps.

What we look for on-site

Broken outer wires per lay length. Corrosion pitting under the outer wires, which we find by opening the lay with a soft pick. Diameter reduction, measured with a caliper across the whole cable and compared to spec; a drop of five percent is a replacement trigger on our sheet. Kinks, bird-caging, and any localized crushing. Sheave condition, because a chewed sheave will eat a brand new cable in weeks. End-fitting integrity at the swage and at the anchor. On four-post lifts we also check for uneven length between the four cables, which shows up as a corner sagging faster than the others. If we find one bad cable, we replace all four as a matched set. That is not an upsell; mismatched cables age differently and re-introduce the exact problem we came to fix.

Replacement is a matched pair, never a single

We will not sell a single replacement cable for a four-post that has three tired originals still on it. Two reasons. The new cable stretches in on a different curve than the old ones and throws off the level of the deck. And the three old cables are almost certainly closer to their fatigue limit than the paperwork suggests, so the shop is one bay session away from the next call. A matched-pair set on a Rotary or a Challenger four-post is a shop-day job for our installer, cables in the truck, and the lift back in service the same afternoon. Restoration owners tend to appreciate this once we walk them through the math: the cost of one cable versus four is small compared to a stored 1967 911 sitting on a compromised deck. Working with restoration shops specifically

Restoration bays are not standard service bays. Vehicles sit longer. Weight distribution is odd because a lot of interior and trim is out of the car. Fluids drip in different places. The lift is often shared across bare shells, running drivers, and finished cars in the same week. All of that pushes cable wear in ways a generic maintenance schedule will not catch. When we scope an inspection for a restoration shop, we ask how long the average vehicle sits, whether the shop has media blasting or paint prep near the lift, and whether cars ever get parked at extreme steering lock on the deck. Those answers change the interval. Ownership records also matter; a lift bought used with unknown service history gets treated as a five-year-old lift on paper, even if the plate reads new. Two ways to start. Send us photos of the cable at the sheave, at the anchor, and along the middle of the run, plus the lift make and serial. That gets a written estimate for a matched-pair replacement or a full inspection. Or call the shop and put a date on the calendar for a technician trip to the Quad Cities.
