The slab is your real budget line
The single biggest determinant of a safe auto lift install is not brand, model, or capacity — it is the concrete under the columns. Every two-post we sell publishes a minimum slab spec, usually four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb lift and six inches for heavy-duty. Our southeast Iowa customer had a 4.5-inch slab poured for a truck bay years earlier, and once we saw the pour date and the mix ticket we knew he was fine. If you cannot find the ticket, we bring a Schmidt hammer and a slab drill and test on site. Skipping this step is the single most common way an install goes wrong. We would rather core-drill three test spots than watch a column shift six months in. Slab depth also drives anchor selection: thinner concrete means longer wedge anchors, and beyond a certain point no anchor is enough. When the slab is under-spec, we cut it out and repour a 6×6 pad rather than force the install.
Rebar, mesh, and the anchor-pullout question
Rebar and wire mesh do two jobs: they hold the slab together under load, and they change how our anchors bite. On the southeast Iowa job the original slab used #4 rebar on 18-inch centers with no mesh. That worked. If your slab uses only fiber reinforcement or wire mesh on chairs, the anchor still holds — the load path just leans harder on concrete compressive strength. What we will not do is set a fleet auto lift on a slab we cannot verify. We pull anchors from the crate the morning of install, torque them to the manufacturer’s spec, and re-torque at the 90-day mark. If any anchor spins free, we stop. A pull-out test at install adds an hour to the day and answers the question forever, and it is what separates a fleet install from a driveway install where someone eyeballs the concrete and hopes.
Capacity for a mixed municipal fleet
A municipal fleet running passenger cars through 3/4-ton pickups almost never needs more than a 10,000 lb auto lift. Our southeast Iowa customer runs Silverado 2500s at the top of his weight range and Impalas at the bottom. Bay layout for oil changes and daily fluid service
An auto lift for oil changes lives or dies by workflow, not raw capacity. Before we drop columns we ask three questions: where does the drain pan sit, where is the used-oil tank, and how does the tech walk from the driver’s door to the filter? On the southeast Iowa install the crew already had a floor drain roughly centered in the bay, so we set the lift with rear columns 42 inches off the drain — enough room for a 20-gallon rolling drain and enough shoulder space around the filter that nobody was stepping on hoses. We kept the passenger-side column clear of the air-hose reel too, because the tech running the drain almost always grabs air for the drain-plug torque or the wheel refit. Small moves like these cut a two-minute walk out of every service, which on a fleet doing eighty oil changes a month is real money.
Electrical and air: what the crew wired that first week
Every commercial auto lift we install is 220V single-phase on a 30-amp dedicated circuit, and we ask the electrician to run a fresh line rather than tap an existing branch. Sharing a circuit with a shop compressor is the number-one cause of nuisance breaker trips we get called back on. Our southeast Iowa customer already had 220V run for a welder, but the amperage was too low, so he added a second run before install day. Air is simpler: 3/8-inch line at 100-120 PSI is fine for shop tools and drain-pan work. We also recommend a battery-backed shop light near the ceiling. Daily and monthly safety checks a crew actually does
Safety walkthroughs stop working when they become paperwork nobody signs. We give every fleet buyer a laminated one-page checklist: daily is cable inspection, arm-restraint engagement, and lock-set sound; monthly is anchor-torque check and hydraulic level; annually is an ALI-certified inspection. The southeast Iowa crew added their own habit — a quick shove on each arm before every lift — and it takes ninety seconds. When one of their asymmetric arms started slipping past its detent last winter, that habit caught it before a vehicle sat on it.
