A collector in southeast Iowa hit the twelve-month mark on his first auto lift last month and sent us a photo of his garage with three cars accounted for. His story is different from most because he built the garage around the lift, not the other way around. He called us before the slab was poured, which is when we can help the most. This is his year-one story, sequenced by build phase, with every decision that saved him money or headaches and every one he would do differently if he had to start over.

Pre-build: talk to us before the slab is poured
Our southeast Iowa collector called us the week before his concrete pour date. That single call saved him a rework line down the road. We spec’d the slab at 6 inches of 4,000 PSI with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers across the auto lift footprint, and standard 4-inch with mesh everywhere else. That over-spec at the lift footprint added a modest cost to the pour and gave him a slab that will handle a 4-post lift indefinitely, plus the option of upgrading to something heavier down the road. If he had poured a standard 4-inch fiber-reinforced slab everywhere, he would have been on the edge of the auto lift spec and either would have lived with a compromise or cut out and repoured later at ten times the cost.
Build month one: framing and ceiling clearance
His pole-barn shop was framed for a 13-foot ceiling, which we specifically pushed for during the pre-build call. A 12-foot ceiling would have worked for storage but pinched him on tall vehicles at full rise. Thirteen feet gives him about 24 inches of head clearance between his runway top and the ceiling with a mid-height classic on the auto lift — enough room to walk under an open hood without ducking. If you can afford one extra foot of ceiling during framing, take it. Reframing a truss set later is not realistic. Every collector we talk to who went short on ceiling regrets it within two years; nobody has ever regretted going tall.
Build month two: electrical rough-in and disconnect
Our southeast Iowa customer had the electrician run 220V single-phase on a 30-amp dedicated circuit during rough-in, with a lockable disconnect at chest height near the lift bay. We also asked for four convenience outlets around the bay and one 120V receptacle in the ceiling for a shop light. All of that got roughed in behind drywall before insulation went up. Install day: what actually happened
The auto lift arrived on a Wednesday and he installed it himself the following Saturday with a friend. He had a skid-steer with forks, so unloading the crate was a ten-minute job. Standing the columns took two hours, setting the runways took another two, and running hydraulics and electrical wrapped it up in seven total hours. He called us twice — once to confirm the cable-crossover pattern under the runways and once to walk through the initial bleed cycle. Both calls took under ten minutes. His first vehicle up was his day driver, unloaded, run to each mechanical lock position on the way to full rise. The lift dropped cleanly to each lock on the way down. Standard install, no surprises.
Month three: alignment turnplates and the first pull
Our southeast Iowa collector added turnplates at month three because he wanted to do his own alignments on a project he was finishing. Turnplates drop into flush recesses at the front runway, and the caster sweep during an alignment pull is where the runway sees its most concentrated load. His first alignment pull was on a restored 1968 Camaro, dialed to factory spec. He used a string box to verify toe before trusting the alignment machine reading, and the numbers matched. Month seven: cable adjustment and runway level
At the seven-month mark he noticed his passenger-side rear runway was about 1/8 inch low at full lock. Standard cable stretch. Adjustment nuts at the top of each column take the stretch out in about fifteen minutes. He set the runways dead-level in one pass and re-checked at month twelve — still level. Skipping this adjustment is what causes uneven cable wear and turns a five-year cable replacement into a three-year one. Every auto lift we sell needs a first cable tension check somewhere in the six-to-ten-month range, and we tell every owner to expect it and to call us if the adjustment does not take.
Year-one summary: what he tells other collectors
At the twelve-month mark our southeast Iowa collector had done four alignments, stored two vehicles overhead for a full winter each, and completed one paint-and-body project underneath the lift with the vehicle up in the air. His summary line when we called at the anniversary: build the garage around the lift, over-spec the slab, over-spec the ceiling, and buy the alignment accessories with the lift instead of a year later.
