What Overhead and Baseplate Actually Mean
Every two-post auto lift needs a way to synchronize the two columns so they raise and lower together. There are two mechanical approaches. An overhead lift routes the equalization cables and hydraulic hoses across the top of the columns through a crossbar that spans the bay. A baseplate lift routes those cables and hoses through a steel plate that sits on top of the floor between the two columns. Both configurations satisfy the ALI safety standard for synchronization. Both are used in tens of thousands of professional shops around the country. They are not different levels of safety — they are different geometries.
Where the geometries matter is in what they occupy. An overhead crossbar occupies vertical space above the vehicle. A baseplate occupies horizontal space between the columns at ground level, forming a low bump the vehicle drives over. Which one is the right occupier depends on your ceiling, your bay length, your vehicle mix, and your workflow. A tire and alignment shop that runs a hundred vehicles a week has different priorities than a diesel repair shop that runs ten. We are going to walk through both from a shop-owner’s perspective.
The Safety Case for Overhead Configuration
Overhead is the configuration we recommend for most professional tire and alignment shops. The reasoning is workflow safety, not intrinsic mechanical safety. When the cables and hoses are routed overhead, the floor between the columns is completely clear. A technician can push a floor jack, a tire cart, an alignment machine, or an air-line reel across the bay without stepping over a plate. A dropped socket rolls across an unobstructed floor and stops at the wall, not against a plate where you have to fish it out.
The safety case is subtle but real. Trip hazards in a busy shop are the single most common source of minor injury reports at commercial insurance carriers, and a baseplate is a small but persistent trip hazard. Over a fifteen-year lift lifespan and thousands of technician-hours crossing the bay, that adds up. Overhead configuration also gives you cleaner access to fluid catch pans, transmission jack setups, and the underside of the vehicle without a plate in the way. The overhead crossbar itself becomes an issue only if your ceiling is under twelve feet, in which case overhead is not the right pick anyway. Above twelve feet clear, overhead is the safer daily-driver configuration for a high-volume auto lift.
The Safety Case for Baseplate Configuration
Baseplate has legitimate use cases, and dismissing it as inferior is a mistake we see other suppliers make. If your ceiling is under twelve feet, or if you need to drive tall vehicles (cube vans, cutaway chassis, service trucks) through the bay to a rear parking area, baseplate is often the only workable configuration. It gets the crossbar out of the vertical space and puts it low. That opens up the vertical envelope for taller vehicles at the cost of the horizontal floor space.
From a safety standpoint, baseplate has one real advantage: no overhead structure to strike with a tall bed cap, a raised tailgate, or a crane hook mid-lift. Body shops that occasionally work on box trucks or service bodies value that. The trip-hazard concern is manageable with good housekeeping and a well-designed plate profile — modern baseplate lifts have low-profile plates with beveled edges that a floor jack rolls over cleanly. The baseplate concern is genuine but not disqualifying. For a shop with a specific vertical clearance problem or a drive-through requirement, baseplate is the right and safe answer, and we sell plenty of them into shops where the geometry demands it.
Transmission Service: The Job That Exposes the Trade-Off
Transmission service is the job where the overhead-versus-baseplate trade-off becomes concrete. Pulling a transmission requires a transmission jack, which is a wheeled floor jack with a saddle sized for a bell housing. That jack needs to roll into the bay under the raised vehicle, position under the transmission, and roll back out with the transmission on board. On an overhead lift, the jack rolls smoothly across a clean floor. On a baseplate lift, the jack has to negotiate the plate at some point in the workflow, which usually means picking a starting position that lets the jack clear the plate at the moment of maximum load.
For a shop that does transmission work every week, that difference matters. It is not unsafe on a baseplate — techs adapt quickly, and the plate is not an obstacle so much as a routing constraint. But it is easier and faster on an overhead. The same logic applies to any wheeled service tool: alignment racks, tire changers with lift assists, ATF exchange machines, and vehicle-mounted diagnostic carts. If your shop’s workflow involves a lot of wheeled equipment moving across the bay, overhead is the workflow-safer choice. If your workflow is stationary techs at fixed benches with fewer rolling tools, baseplate has less downside.
The Border Shop Reality: Building Types and Ceiling Heights
Shops on the Iowa-Nebraska border are a mix of purpose-built pre-engineered metal buildings, converted implement dealerships, and repurposed farm shops. Ceiling heights vary wildly. New metal buildings put up in the last fifteen years tend to have fourteen to sixteen foot ceilings and easily support overhead configurations. Older converted buildings, especially the ones with cross-tied trusses or ductwork run below the trusses, often have effective clearances closer to eleven feet, which pushes toward baseplate.
The right first question for a border shop owner is not “overhead or baseplate” but “what is my lowest overhead obstruction, measured from finished slab to the bottom of that obstruction, in the specific bay where the auto lift will go.” Once you know that number, the configuration choice makes itself. Above twelve feet clear, go overhead. Between eleven and twelve, it is a close call and depends on your vehicle mix. Under eleven, baseplate is the answer. That framework has never steered a shop wrong, and it takes the emotional charge out of the decision.
Capacity Sizing for a Tire and Alignment Shop
Beyond configuration, capacity is the other must-get-right spec. A general-purpose tire and alignment shop that sees mostly passenger cars, half-ton pickups, and the occasional three-quarter-ton work truck is well-served by a 10,000-pound two-post auto lift. That capacity handles ninety-five percent of the U.S. light-vehicle fleet with plenty of margin. If you regularly see full-size vans, one-ton pickups, or dually trucks, step up to a 12,000-pound lift. If your shop specializes in medium-duty or work trucks, look at 15,000 or 18,000 pound platforms.
Do not undersize based on average vehicle weight. Two-post lifts are rated at gross weight per pair of arms, and a fully loaded work truck with a topper, tools, and a full tank sits closer to its rated GVWR than most owners realize. The safety margin on a two-post lift is designed around the plated capacity, and running near or over that plate causes accelerated wear on cables, cylinders, and locks even when no immediate failure occurs. Undersizing is the single most common mistake we see, and it is the mistake most likely to shorten the service life of the lift. Buy the capacity you need for your heaviest ten percent of vehicles, not your median.
