A two-post overhead auto lift is the right platform for oil pan access. You need the wheels off the ground so the engine can sink slightly on its mounts if needed, you need clear access under the vehicle for pan removal and gasket cleanup, and you need enough vertical space to swing the pan out from between the subframe and the crossmember without contact. On a properly configured symmetric two-post, that access is clean. On a baseplate lift, the plate is out of the way of the actual pan work. On a four-post, the wheels are on the runways and the engine cannot settle, which makes some pan removals require an engine hoist support — doable but slower. For a shop doing pan work regularly, two-post is the right pick.
Arm Configuration for Collision Work
Asymmetric versus symmetric arms is a decision most mechanical shops make without much thought, but body shops should think about it carefully. Asymmetric arms rotate the vehicle slightly rearward on the columns, which gives more door-opening clearance in front. In a body shop, door openings are just as important, but so is access to the front bumper and headlight assemblies. Asymmetric geometry can put the front bumper further from the columns, which is helpful when techs are pulling front covers or accessing headlight mounts from the side.

Modern vehicles are heavier than they were fifteen years ago.
