He had been burned once — bought equipment from an online seller, had a power unit fail in year two, and spent five weeks trying to find someone who would honor the paperwork. His shop does a steady diet of oil pan gasket work on Cummins and Duramax chassis, which means a truck sits in the air for six to ten hours at a stretch and the bay is dead if the equipment is down. This article walks through what warranties actually cover, how a claim really works, and what the whole project costs from purchase order to first lift.

Oil pan gasket work is a stress test for any lift

Pulling an oil pan on a heavy-duty diesel is one of the least forgiving jobs in the building. The truck goes up and stays up. Technicians are underneath with a transmission jack, a pan that may weigh sixty pounds full of residual oil, and sometimes a front axle that has to be dropped to clear the sump. That is static load for most of a shift, with intermittent shock loading every time something heavy comes off the chassis or a breaker bar gets leaned on.

Long static holds do not wear cables the way an express oil bay does, but they punish other things. Hydraulic cylinder seals sit under continuous pressure. Lock ladders carry the full load for hours rather than seconds. Anchor bolts see sustained shear. And because the truck is heavy and the shop is busy, nobody wants to lower it to reposition, so arms get run out to awkward angles and stay there. When we spec equipment for this kind of work in southwest Iowa, we push customers toward more capacity than the truck weight strictly requires — a 15,000 or 18,000 lb unit under a 12,000 lb truck, not a 12,000 lb unit at its rated limit. That margin is also, incidentally, the single best thing you can do to keep a warranty claim from getting denied.

What an auto lift warranty actually covers

Most commercial-grade manufacturers write a tiered warranty. Structural components — columns, carriages, arms, runways — typically carry the longest term, often five years and sometimes lifetime on the structure itself. Hydraulic components including the cylinder and power unit usually get one to two years. Electrical components, meaning the motor, contactor, and controls, are often twelve months. Wear items — cables, lock dogs, arm pads, hoses, seals — are almost never covered past the first year, and often not at all, because they are consumables.

What almost no warranty covers: improper installation, anchoring into concrete that does not meet spec, exceeding rated capacity, missed maintenance, and damage from contaminated hydraulic fluid. Those five exclusions account for the overwhelming majority of denied claims we see. Notice that four of the five are things the shop controls. If you install an auto lift yourself into a four-inch slab when the manual calls for six inches at 3,000 PSI, you have voided the structural coverage before you ever raise a truck. Read the concrete spec first. It is usually on the second or third page of the installation manual and it is not a suggestion.

How a claim workflow really goes

Here is the honest sequence. Something fails. You call us, not the manufacturer. We ask for the model, the serial number, the install date, and a description of the symptom, and we usually ask for photos or a short video. If the failure is diagnosable from that, we open the claim with the manufacturer on your behalf. If it is not, we send a tech out, and if the part turns out to be covered, that diagnostic visit is generally absorbed.

The manufacturer then either ships the replacement part directly or authorizes us to pull one from our Ames stock. Turnaround on a covered power unit is commonly three to seven business days; a covered cylinder can run longer because they are often built to order. Labor is the part people misunderstand — many manufacturer warranties cover the part but not the labor to install it, or cover labor only in year one. We tell customers that up front so there is no surprise invoice. The reason we handle the paperwork instead of pointing you at an 800 number is straightforward: a shop owner should be turning wrenches, not chasing a claim number, and the truck shop in southwest Iowa that started this conversation had already lost five weeks to exactly that.

Cost breakdown: the equipment itself

Rough tiers for commercial two-post equipment, before shipping and install. A 10,000 lb clearfloor unit from a name brand lands in the low-to-mid four figures. Step up to 12,000 lb and you are mid four figures. A 15,000 to 18,000 lb three-stage-arm unit suited to medium-duty trucks moves into the upper four figures. Once you are looking at 30,000 lb capacity or a PKS heavy-duty configuration for class 7 and 8 work, you are into five figures and the conversation shifts to mobile columns as an alternative.

The temptation is always to buy the cheapest thing that meets the number. We would push back on that for oil pan work specifically. The difference between a bargain import and a Rotary or Challenger unit shows up in cylinder seal life, lock mechanism design, arm restraint quality, and — critically — in whether parts are available in five years. We still stock parts for Rotary units built in the 1990s. There are brands sold heavily ten years ago that we cannot source a single component for today. When you are pricing an auto lift, price the parts availability too, because that is the real cost of ownership.

Cost breakdown: freight, concrete, and electrical

Freight on a two-post is not trivial. The columns ship on a pallet and the whole assembly runs 1,500 to 2,500 pounds depending on capacity. Expect a few hundred dollars for LTL delivery to a commercial address with a dock, and more if you need a liftgate or residential delivery. Plan for that in the budget rather than treating it as a surprise line item.

Concrete is where projects blow up. Most commercial units want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for lighter capacities and six inches or more for heavy-duty. Older shop floors in southwest Iowa are frequently three and a half inches over questionable base, and a lot of them have been patched. If a core sample comes back short, you are cutting out and pouring footing pads — typically a four-by-four or five-by-five pad per column, cured 28 days before anchoring. Budget four figures for that work and add a month to your timeline. Electrical is simpler but still real money: most power units run 220V single phase, some are 208/230 three phase, and you will need a dedicated circuit with a disconnect. Cost breakdown: professional installation and startup

Installation on a standard two-post runs a crew most of a day. That covers layout, drilling and setting anchors, plumbing the hydraulic lines, wiring the power unit to your disconnect, bleeding the system, setting cable tension, shimming the columns to plumb, cycle testing, and verifying that both lock ladders engage simultaneously. Cost lands in the mid three figures to low four figures depending on capacity and how cooperative the site is. Heavy-duty and inground work costs more and takes longer.

Doing it yourself is legal and plenty of capable shops do. The catch is that a self-install can complicate a warranty claim if the manufacturer decides the failure traces back to installation error — and the burden of proof lands on you. A documented professional install with a signed startup checklist eliminates that argument entirely. It also gets you an ALI-compliant baseline inspection record, which matters if OSHA or your insurance carrier ever asks. All in, a realistic total project for a mid-capacity commercial auto lift in a shop with good concrete runs from the mid four figures to the low five figures.
