Working with a collector in the Ankeny area who spent a year with his new two-post learning what mattered and what did not, we watched the arm-configuration decision play out from install day through the first year of routine service. Meeting the customer: what he was hoping to lift

Our Ankeny-area customer showed up at the shop last spring with a spreadsheet. Literally, a spreadsheet, of every vehicle he owned. Three project cars, a daily driver, a work truck, and a family SUV. The heaviest was his crew-cab short-bed at 5,900 lb. The oldest was a 1969 muscle car at 3,400 lb. He wanted one lift to handle all of them for his own annual safety inspections and general maintenance in his new 40×60 shop. Capacity math said 9,000 lb minimum. Ceiling height was 14 feet, which cleared any two-post on our shortlist. The real question was arm configuration. Symmetric or asymmetric? He had asked three online sellers and gotten three different answers. Our answer, based on the vehicles on his sheet, was symmetric, because he had trucks, and trucks do not asymmetric-load well. That decision shaped everything downstream, from install day through his first year. This is his first-year story, and it is a case study in how much a single arm-configuration decision affects the day-to-day of auto lifts for home garage owners.

Symmetric vs asymmetric: what the terms actually mean

Asymmetric two-posts rotate the vehicle back and place the driver’s door in front of the column, which lets the driver exit more easily after the vehicle is in position. The front arms are shorter than the rear. Symmetric two-posts center the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms front and rear. Asymmetric is the classic car-dealer choice because it is optimized for passenger cars and easier driver egress. Symmetric handles heavier vehicles and long wheelbases better because the load is distributed evenly across the columns. Neither is universally right. If your fleet is all sedans and coupes, asymmetric is more comfortable. If you have trucks or SUVs in the mix, symmetric handles them without arm-length limitations and gives you cleaner lift geometry on longer wheelbases. Install day and the first arm placement

Install went in over two days. Day one was column set, anchor drill, and equalizer cable route. Day two was arms, hydraulics, and commissioning. The symmetric arm assembly is straightforward. Swing the arms out, drop the pads onto the pickup points marked in the vehicle manual, and lift. Our customer’s muscle car was the first up. Pickup points on a first-gen platform sit fairly far forward relative to the wheelbase; on a symmetric lift, that put more weight over the front arms than the rear, but well inside spec. He raised it 18 inches, walked around, checked the pads, and took it to full height. Smooth. Then his truck. Pickup points on the crew-cab short-bed are further back but symmetric works fine because the truck’s own weight distribution is closer to 50/50 loaded than the muscle car’s is. Six lifts on install day covered his whole spreadsheet. We recorded pad placement for each vehicle on a printout he stuck to the powerpack. Six months in: what he learned about symmetric arms

By month six he had cycled every vehicle on the spreadsheet at least once, plus a friend’s SUV and a coworker’s van he had not originally listed. The symmetric geometry handled everything without arm-swing conflicts. His one adjustment was learning to reach further to the door handle on his coupe, the classic asymmetric argument in real life. It added maybe five seconds to the exit and he stopped noticing after the first month. On the trucks, the symmetric setup meant he could get to the drivetrain from either side without arm interference on longer wheelbases, a genuine day-to-day win. The other symmetric-side benefit that only shows up after real use is arm placement flexibility. He could position pads on unusual pickup points (like the reinforced crossmember on his muscle car’s aftermarket subframe connectors) without asymmetric-length limitations. For a customer with a mixed fleet, the symmetric win compounds over months. If he had bought his fleet six months earlier (sedans only), he would probably have gone asymmetric and been just as happy. Fleet composition beats every other factor.

Annual safety inspection weekend and the pickup point puzzle

At the twelve-month mark he did his own thorough annual safety inspection on every vehicle in the fleet. Iowa does not require state inspections on private vehicles, but any collector worth the title does one anyway. That is the underrated argument for auto lifts for home garage ownership. With his two-post he did brake inspections, ball-joint checks, tie-rod play, and full undercarriage rust surveys on all six vehicles in one weekend. On jack stands the same job would have been three weekends of stiff necks. The one moment of hesitation came with his classic muscle car, which has aftermarket subframe connectors that are not in any lift manual pickup-point diagram. He called us; we walked him through where the OEM pinch welds still exist under the connectors, and he placed the pads exactly on OEM structure with the connectors clear. That kind of judgment call is why we recommend an install visit for any classic car. Factory pickup points are not always where you would expect after 55 years of modification history. The one time asymmetric would have been better

The one moment where asymmetric would have won came about eight months in, when he bought a friend’s low-sill convertible for a weekend detail-and-fix. The convertible has an unusually low sill height and a driver’s door that fouls the asymmetric column at exit. But on a symmetric lift, the columns sit further from the door than they would on an asymmetric. He got out of the car without issue. So actually the symmetric handled that convertible fine too. The truer “asymmetric would have been better” moment was on the family SUV, where the door swing is wide. On symmetric geometry the door does not quite clear the column at full open. His family has learned to open it 80 percent, but if the fleet had been all sedans and if driver egress had been the priority, asymmetric would have been marginally more comfortable. In the balance, symmetric won them over anyway because of how much easier it was on their trucks. Real-world fleet use is what makes the decision. Not the online forum.

Would we build the same lift again next year

The honest answer at the twelve-month mark is yes. Same lift, same brand, same arm configuration. He would change one thing: he would add a second lift for the second bay of his shop. Not because the first one is failing (it is not), but because a mixed fleet moves faster with two lifts in a working shop, and he now knows exactly which arm configuration he would pick for lift number two: probably asymmetric for the sedans and coupes, keeping the symmetric for the trucks. That is the collector’s version of a professional shop’s two-bay layout.
