A car restoration shop owner up in northeast Iowa called us this spring about auto lifts for home garage installs — he was building a heated garage next to his shop and wanted a two-post for rear-end and differential fluid work on the pickups and vintage muscle cars he ran through. Good use case. His question was the one we get most: how thick does the concrete have to be, and does it need rebar? The answers depend on the lift, but the framework we walk buyers through is the same every time. Get the slab right and the rest is bolts and hose.

The concrete question and why it matters
The lift is anchored to the slab. If the slab fails, the anchors pull out, the columns tip, and you have a bad day at best and a lawsuit at worst. That’s why the concrete question is the first engineering question we ask. Home buyers sometimes want to skip it because a new-build looks fine and an existing slab hasn’t cracked yet. Skipping it is how a warranty ends. Every ALI-certified lift comes with a required slab specification — thickness in inches, compressive strength in PSI, and reinforcement type. The manufacturer put those numbers in the manual because independent testing showed the lift needs that slab to hold the anchors under load. Anchor pullout is the mechanical failure they’re guarding against. Anchor pullout is what happens when the slab is thinner or weaker than specified. The northeast Iowa caller was planning a new pour, which is the best-case scenario because we get to spec the slab before it’s poured. Retrofit slabs are harder. Either way, the concrete conversation happens before the lift conversation continues. Every time.
Slab thickness: what the manufacturer specs actually say
For most home-garage two-post lifts, the manufacturer specifies at least four inches of 3,000 to 3,500 PSI concrete under the column footprint. Heavier commercial two-posts and 12,000-pound four-posts often spec four-and-a-half or five inches. Some brands accept lower with rebar reinforcement; some do not. You don’t guess these numbers. You open the installation manual, you find the anchor specification, and you read the slab requirement in inches and PSI right there. If the manual says four inches at 3,000 PSI and your slab is four inches at 3,000 PSI with rebar, you’re good. If your slab is three-and-a-half inches at unknown PSI, you’re guessing, and guessing under a lift column is the wrong kind of guessing. On the northeast Iowa new pour, we specced five inches at 3,500 PSI with rebar, because we wanted headroom and the extra thickness costs almost nothing at pour time. Adding an inch on a new pour is a few extra yards of concrete. Adding an inch on an existing slab is a saw cut and repour. Do it now if you can.
Rebar, mesh, and fiber: which one you need
Reinforcement types get confused often. Rebar is steel bar tied in a grid — the strongest reinforcement, spec’d on most new pours for lift installs. Wire mesh is a lighter grid, sometimes acceptable on lighter lifts but usually not enough on its own for a two-post. Fiber is short strands mixed into the concrete itself, which controls surface cracking but doesn’t add the structural pull-through resistance you need for anchor loading. Fiber and mesh are common on residential garage pours; rebar is common on commercial pours. If you’re building a new garage specifically to install a lift, spec rebar. Number four bar on twelve-inch centers is the common spec, though we defer to your engineer. Don’t accept a slab that’s fiber-only or mesh-only for a two-post lift unless the manufacturer’s manual explicitly allows it, and even then we’d upgrade to rebar for peace of mind. It’s the cheapest insurance on the whole build. That’s the reinforcement rule for auto lifts for home garage installs regardless of state. The northeast Iowa buyer’s contractor was already planning rebar for the truck-side of the pour. We had him extend it across the lift bay too. That’s a phone call, not an argument.
Auto lifts for home garage: what a new pour should look like
For auto lifts for home garage installs where you’re pouring new concrete, we recommend the following: a subgrade that’s compacted and drained, a vapor barrier under the slab, five inches of concrete at 3,500 PSI, number four rebar on twelve-inch centers, and control joints planned so they don’t fall directly under a lift column. Control joints are the sawcuts your contractor makes to force cracks to happen in a straight line where you want them. If a control joint runs under a column base, the anchors are trying to hold across a designed crack. That’s bad. On the northeast Iowa pour, we laid out the two lift positions on paper first, then handed the plan to the concrete contractor so his control joints avoided both column footprints. That kind of coordination on a new pour is what makes the eventual lift install easy. It also gives us a slab that will host the current lift and probably any future lift you’d want to add. Differential fluid work and the arm swing you need
Once the slab is sorted, the actual use — differential fluid on rear-ends — drives the arm-swing spec. Differential covers on domestic trucks and vintage muscle sit at the rear of the vehicle, under the axle. To reach them, you need the rear arms of a two-post to swing wide enough that the differential is between the arms and accessible with a socket. On most home-garage two-posts, that’s not a problem for a passenger car. It becomes a problem for a long-bed truck where the rear pickup points push the arms further back and the differential sits close to the rear column. We check the specific vehicles on the site walk. The northeast Iowa buyer had a couple of mid-seventies muscle cars — short wheelbases, easy geometry — plus a modern half-ton pickup for daily use. The pickup was the vehicle that drove the arm-reach spec. We ran the numbers and confirmed the two-post model he was considering had the rear arm reach to place the pickup points cleanly and still give a wrench-swing at the differential cover. What to do with an existing slab that’s short
Not everyone is pouring new. If you’re retrofitting into an existing garage and the slab is three-and-a-half inches or its condition is unknown, you have three options. One: core-drill and inspect at the column locations, and if it’s within spec, install as-is. Two: cut and repour just the column pads — a four-foot-by-four-foot pad under each column, doweled into the existing slab, poured to spec. Three: if the whole slab is too thin or damaged, plan a full rip-out and repour, which is expensive but honest. The middle option — cut and repour the pads — is the sweet spot for most retrofits. It costs a fraction of a full slab, it puts spec-thick concrete exactly where it matters, and it’s invisible once the lift is installed. The northeast Iowa install plan
The final plan for the northeast Iowa build looked like this: five-inch pour at 3,500 PSI with number four rebar on twelve-inch centers across the lift bay, control joints laid out to avoid both column footprints, a dedicated 220V circuit for the two-post power unit, and a hydraulic line and air line routed together in a single trench from the compressor room to the lift columns. Install would happen thirty days after the pour so the concrete could cure to full strength — that’s the manufacturer’s spec, not a suggestion. We’d ship the lift to the shop next door for staging so the freight truck didn’t fight the new drive. The lift itself is a full-rise two-post, ALI Gold certified, with the arm-reach package that clears the pickup’s differential. That’s a build that will host differential work and every other under-vehicle job the owner takes on for the next decade. That’s what we mean when we say auto lifts for home garage projects should start with the concrete. Get the slab right and the rest of the install is math. Get the slab wrong and no lift makes it better.
