What This Overland Build Actually Needed

The truck in question sat about four inches higher than stock thanks to a suspension lift, rode on 35s, and carried a rear locker plus a heavier aftermarket bumper and winch setup up front. That’s a different weight distribution than a stock daily driver, and it’s something we account for when speccing auto lifts for home garage installs for modified trucks. We landed on a 10,000 lb 2-post lift with adjustable arms that could reach past the larger tires and aftermarket rock sliders to get solid frame contact points.

Ceiling height was the other consideration. Recommended Cable Replacement Intervals for Home-Garage Use

For a home-garage lift used a few times a week, most manufacturers recommend a visual cable inspection at every service interval and full replacement around the 5 to 7 year mark under normal use, sooner if you’re lifting heavier vehicles regularly or if you spot visible fraying, kinks, or rust earlier than that. Given that this build carries a heavier-than-stock truck and gets used for maintenance-heavy off-road upkeep, we recommended he move to an annual visual inspection rather than waiting for a scheduled service call, and swap cables proactively if he notices any flat spots or strand separation.

Cables are one of the cheapest parts on a 2-post lift and one of the most consequential to ignore. A failed cable on one side can drop a corner of the vehicle unexpectedly, and for anyone doing diff work with their head and hands underneath the frame, that’s the kind of failure you want to prevent, not react to. Choosing the Right Lift Brand for Lifted and Modified Trucks

This particular build landed right at that line, heavy enough that we wanted margin above the truck’s actual weight rather than cutting it close to a lift’s max rating.

We generally recommend sizing the lift capacity well above your vehicle’s actual weight, especially for modified trucks where aftermarket parts add pounds you might not fully account for. A lift rated tight to your current build leaves no room if you add a bigger winch, steel bumpers, or a bed rack down the line, and buying the next size up initially is almost always cheaper than upgrading equipment later.
