A vehicle that shifts off its pads because an arm walked loose can fall, and it doesn’t care whether the garage is licensed commercial space.

That lock is the mechanical backup that holds the lift in the air if hydraulic pressure drops for any reason, whether it’s a slow leak in a cylinder or someone bumping the release lever by accident while working underneath.

On a home unit that only gets used occasionally, seals age differently than they do on a lift running daily in a commercial bay. That means the arm restraints and safety cams aren’t just a liability issue, they’re a workflow issue. If a lift can’t hold a car rock-solid at inspection height, the tech is fighting the equipment instead of doing the job.

EV vehicles add another wrinkle, since battery packs shift the center of gravity and often require different lift point locations than the gas equivalent. Sizing the Lift to the Vehicle, Not the Garage

Buyers regularly tell us how much garage space they have before they tell us what they’re lifting, and we understand why, but weight rating and vehicle width matter more. A lift built for typical sedans and light trucks under 7,000 pounds is a different machine than one built for a full-size EV pickup pushing 9,000 pounds with the battery installed. Getting this backwards is how people end up with a lift that technically fits the garage but can’t safely hold the vehicle they actually own.

We always ask what you’re driving now and what you might drive in five years before recommending a model, because most people keep a home lift far longer than they keep any one vehicle.

Why a Site Visit Beats Guessing Every Time

We’ve offered to swing out and lay out a lift in a customer’s garage before they buy, and it’s one of the most useful ten minutes we spend with a new customer. Ceiling height, door clearance, and post placement all interact in ways that are hard to picture from a spec sheet. A 12-foot sidewall sounds like plenty of room until you factor in the lift’s fully-raised height plus the vehicle plus a few feet of working clearance above that.

Home garage lifts that sit idle for weeks at a time are actually more prone to lock hesitation than lifts that run every day, just because the mechanisms aren’t exercised as often.
