A weekend hobbyist doing three brake jobs a year has different priorities than a pro who needs the wheels off and hanging free forty times. A two-post lift grips the vehicle at four pinch-weld or lift-pad points, which puts the wheels in the air with the full weight on the frame. Arm restraints: how they differ side by side
On a two-post lift, each of the four swing arms carries a spring-loaded pin restraint that engages a toothed gear at the arm pivot. On a Rotary or Challenger commercial two-post the pin is stout, the spring is heavy, and the audible click is unmistakable. Four-post lifts do not have arm restraints because they do not have swing arms. The vehicle sits on runways with its own wheels and the runways are locked to the columns. Safety cams: two-post versus four-post
Safety cams are the mechanical redundant locks that catch the lift if the hydraulic system loses pressure. On a two-post they sit inside each column and engage every two to two and a half inches of travel. You hear them tick as the lift rises, and you settle the vehicle onto them by lowering slightly after reaching working height. On a four-post they run along each column with the same tick spacing, and you settle onto them the same way.
The functional difference for CV axle work is angle of load. On a two-post, the cams are holding a load that is trying to rotate the column slightly outward because the arms extend away from the column base. On a four-post, the cams are holding a purely vertical load with almost no rotational component. Speed of a wheels-off job
On a two-post lift, a CV axle job goes like this: drive in, set the pads under the pinch welds, raise until the wheels clear, listen for the arm-pin click, listen for the cam ticks, lower onto the nearest lock, pull the wheels, do the work. From drive-in to wheels-off is under three minutes for a practiced tech. That speed compounds across forty jobs a year.
On a four-post lift, the same job requires driving up, chocking, deploying rolling jacks under the axle or subframe, raising the jacks, and only then pulling the wheels. Add two to three minutes per job. Over forty jobs, that is roughly two extra hours a year, which is manageable but noticeable. That said, four-post storage capacity between jobs is a legitimate advantage if the same bay parks a second vehicle overnight. Anchor loads and lateral force
Two-post lifts transfer nearly all lateral force into two anchor points at each column base, four anchors per column. Four-posts spread the same vehicle weight across four column bases with lower per-anchor load. For a well-poured six-inch slab with rebar, either handles the load. For a marginal four-inch slab, four-post loads are gentler and forgive minor slab issues that would spook a two-post install.
The Ankeny customer had a fresh six-inch slab with number-four rebar on twelve-inch centers, so anchor load was not the deciding factor. It should be a factor for anyone with older or unknown-spec concrete. We check the slab on every quote and adjust our recommendation accordingly.
