Farm shop owners near the Iowa-Missouri border ask us about auto lifts for home garage more often than any other rural customer group. The reason is simple: a farm shop with a decent slab and a pole-barn ceiling has almost every prerequisite for a serious lift, and the general daily maintenance a farm operation puts through the shop pays back the lift’s cost inside a year. But the slab — always the slab — is the pre-purchase question that decides whether the install goes clean or turns into a change-order mess. This checklist walks the slab questions we ask before we ever quote a lift, so a rural buyer knows what to inspect before we visit.

Checklist item 1: measure the slab thickness before you shop
The first question we ask a rural farm shop owner is slab thickness at the intended lift location. Rotary and Challenger commercial two-posts require a minimum four inches of concrete at the column footprint, and many manufacturers spec four and a quarter or four and a half for safety margin. Four-post lifts are more forgiving because load spreads across four columns, but three inches under a column is not adequate for either configuration.
Measure by core-drilling a small test hole at the intended column location — a half-inch masonry bit through the slab tells you the thickness in five minutes. Alternatively, if the slab was poured to a known spec you have documentation for, that spec is usually reliable. What we do not accept is a guess. On a pole barn built forty years ago, guesses on slab thickness are wrong more than half the time. A five-minute test-hole is the cheapest insurance against a change-order on install day. If the slab is under-spec, we can still install with column shims or an anchor upgrade, but we need to know before we cut the truck loose from the warehouse.
Checklist item 2: rebar spacing or fiber mesh?
Modern slabs use either steel rebar on a grid pattern or fiber-mesh reinforcement mixed into the concrete pour. Both are acceptable for a lift install, with slight differences in how anchors bite. Rebar on twelve-inch centers gives the most confidence — anchors land in solid concrete between rebar strands, and the whole slab flexes as a single unit under load. Fiber mesh is lighter on flex resistance but still solid for column loads under rated lift capacity.
What we do not want to see is an unreinforced slab pour with no rebar and no fiber. Older farm shops sometimes have exactly that — a simple concrete pour on grade, no reinforcement, decades of freeze-thaw cycling with visible surface cracks. That slab is not automatically a no-go, but it requires an upgrade path: either a slab overlay pour, a bolted-through steel plate at each column, or a lift configuration that spreads load more widely. We spec these upgrades honestly when the slab needs them, and we do not bury the cost inside the lift quote.
Checklist item 3: overhead clearance for that pole barn
A common farm shop pole barn runs eleven to fourteen feet at the eave with a peak higher in the center. That gives working clearance for most two-post lifts, but the math is worth running before ordering. Total clearance needed equals lift full-raise height plus vehicle overall height plus overhead safety-bar clearance plus a hand-space margin at the top. On a 10,000 lb two-post lifting a full-size pickup, that total lands around thirteen to fourteen feet.
If the ceiling clears cleanly, standard column height works. If the ceiling is marginal, we can spec a low-ceiling column option or a lift configuration with the safety cable routed lower. What is a mistake is buying a lift at standard height, hoping it fits, and discovering on install day that the top of the safety bar hits a joist. Checklist item 4: power drop or hydraulic pump routing
A two-post lift needs 220V single-phase power to the hydraulic pump, typically drawn from a 30-amp breaker on a dedicated circuit. In a farm shop that already has 220V for a compressor or welder, adding another circuit is a modest electrician job. In a shop wired only for 110V, it is a bigger project. We ask about existing service capacity before quoting, because the electrical scope is often more variable than the lift install itself.
The pump location matters too. Standard two-post configurations put the pump on one column, either driver-side or passenger-side. Rural shops sometimes prefer the pump on the wall to keep the column footprint clean; that requires a wall-mount pump enclosure and a longer hydraulic hose. Neither is a problem to spec, but both are decisions to make before install. What we look for is a turn-around area near the shop building — enough space for the delivery truck to back to the door and offload the columns and packaging. If the drive-in path is narrow or curves tightly, we ask ahead of time and arrange a smaller delivery configuration.

Once the lift is on the slab and unpacked, the install itself takes half a day for a two-post and up to a full day for a four-post with rolling jacks. We commission the lift with the owner on-site, walk through operation, and hand over the operator manual and the ALI certification documentation. When we walk away from a slab that is not ready
Occasionally we tell a rural buyer their slab is not ready for the lift they want to buy. The reasons are consistent: slab under three inches thick, no reinforcement plus visible cracking, standing water beneath the slab in wet seasons, or an anchor location that hits an underground utility line. Any of those means the install stops until the slab issue is resolved. That resolution might be a slab overlay pour, a full slab replacement, a lift relocation to a different bay, or a switch to a four-post lift that spreads load differently.
None of those solutions are hidden costs on our end — we identify them at the site visit and quote them honestly before the buyer signs. What we do not do is install a lift on an under-spec slab because the buyer is impatient. That is the install that fails at year three, injures someone, and puts every buyer’s confidence in our name at risk.
