The single biggest predictor of whether auto lifts for home garage installs go smoothly is not the brand of the lift. It is the site survey we do before the box ever leaves the warehouse. We just wrapped an install for an off-road and overlanding builder in Marion, Iowa who wanted a home lift for differential fluid service on his own rigs plus the customer builds he sometimes takes home. We used his job as a chance to walk through what a real site survey actually looks like, because a lot of the free advice online is either sales pitch or generic warnings.

Why site surveys are step one for auto lifts for home garage projects

Every home lift install we quote starts with a phone call, but the real work is the visit. When we pull into a driveway to lay out auto lifts for home garage owners, we bring a tape, a laser level, a stud finder, a moisture meter, and a copy of the lift’s install drawing. The point is not to sell — the point is to catch the problems that turn a one-day install into a three-week project. On the Marion job, the owner had already decided he wanted a four-post for storage and diff service on lifted trucks. Our job was to confirm the slab, the ceiling, the doors, the power, and the drainage were all going to cooperate. We found one issue, fixed it in a morning, and installed the lift the following week. That is what a survey buys you: no ordered-and-stuck lifts sitting on a pallet in your driveway.

Slab thickness, age, and reinforcement

The slab is the first thing we check because it is the most expensive thing to fix. On the Marion barn we cored a small test spot near where the column footprint would land and confirmed 4.5 inches of concrete on gravel base, no visible cracks, poured about eight years ago. That is a textbook home garage slab for a four-post lift. What we look for is uniform thickness, no obvious cold joints where the runway would cross, no efflorescence suggesting standing moisture from below, and a compressive strength that matches what the lift maker calls for in the manual. If a slab reads under 4 inches or shows heaving, we say so. On one recent job an owner had a beautiful new barn and a 3-inch slab. He poured a 6×14 pad in the lift bay before we came back, and the install was clean. Slabs are honest — they tell you what they can hold if you ask them.

Ceiling clearance, real numbers

The Marion shop had a nominal 12-foot sidewall but the actual clear height under the truss chord was 11 feet 4 inches. That is not unusual — the difference between advertised sidewall and true clearance is often 6 to 10 inches once you account for the truss depth, purlins, and any lights or lift-arm swing. For his four-post rated to raise a 7,000-pound rig on 35-inch tires he needed roughly 10 feet 8 inches to top out safely. We had six inches to spare, which is comfortable. Anything under four inches of clearance above the highest point of the lifted vehicle we call tight. Under two inches we say no. Owners who skip this measurement end up with lifts they cannot fully raise, and that is a heartbreaker after paying for delivery and install.

Doors, working space, and vehicle path

A common mistake we catch on surveys is a lift laid out so that a raised vehicle blocks the swing of a service door, or so that the runways sit too close to a wall to open a driver’s door under load. On the Marion install we shifted the layout 18 inches to preserve door swing on the far wall, and 8 inches back from the main overhead door so a raised truck would not overhang the door track. Small moves that only make sense when someone with lift experience is standing in the space with you. Power, air, and drainage

Most home garage lifts run on 220 single-phase, drawing modest amperage, and any barn with a subpanel already has more than enough. What we check is where the outlet lives relative to the power unit, whether it is a real dedicated circuit or a shared line running a compressor and a heater, and whether the owner wants air plumbed to the lift. On the Marion job the owner already had a compressor 20 feet away and we added a quarter-inch air drop next to the power unit so he could hook up an impact without dragging hoses. Drainage matters if the owner plans to do fluid service — we make sure the slab pitches to a drain or that he has a big enough drip tray for diff and trans work. The Marion floor pitched to a floor drain already, which made this easy.

What went into the actual install

Install day for auto lifts for home garage buyers is usually the shortest part of the project. On the Marion job two of us landed columns, ran cables, plumbed the hydraulics, cycled the lift twenty times empty, then twenty more with a test vehicle, and had the owner run his first real service by mid-afternoon. The owner did a diff drain and refill on a lifted midsize truck as our shakedown load — an ideal first job, low weight, quick access, easy to spot leaks. Since the slab, ceiling, layout, and power had all been sorted at the survey, install day was the boring day it is supposed to be.
