Item 1: Capacity that actually matches your fleet
Farm shops routinely underestimate the capacity they need. A three-quarter-ton diesel pickup fully loaded is closer to 8,500 pounds than the 6,500 people quote off memory. Add a stripped-out trailer or a full toolbox and you can crowd a 9,000 pound lift on paper. If your heaviest vehicle is a 6,500 pound half-ton, buy the 10,000 pound lift. If your heaviest is a three-quarter-ton diesel around 8,500 pounds, buy the 12,000 pound lift. The extra capacity costs a few hundred dollars up front and pays you back in every year you never worry whether the lift can handle a loaded truck. Undersized lifts do not fail dramatically. They wear cables faster, cycle relief valves harder, and shorten the operational life of the machine. Right-size once and move on.
Item 2: Seasonal storage: 2-post vs 4-post decision
Most farm shops we quote have a summer vehicle and a winter vehicle, or a project car that gets pulled out for shows and stored the rest of the year. That is a textbook 4-post storage-lift use case. A 4-post lets you drive the stored car up, lock it at height, and park a second daily driver underneath. No fussing with pads, no wrestling arms into position, and the vehicle is supported at all four tires on ramps rather than pinch welds. For active service work, though, a 4-post is a real pain because the wheels do not hang free. Most farm-shop buyers who do both storage and service either buy two lifts, or buy a 4-post with a rolling bridge jack so they can lift the wheels off the ramps when they need to service them. If your primary need is storage, buy the 4-post. If it is service, buy the 2-post and store cars a different way.
Item 3: Warranty coverage in plain English
Every major lift brand we stock (Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas) carries a manufacturer warranty that reads roughly the same: structural components covered for 5 years, hydraulic and electrical components 1 to 2 years, wear items (cables, seals) 6 months to 1 year. Read the fine print for exclusions. Almost every warranty excludes damage from improper installation, which is one of the reasons we do the install ourselves rather than dropping a lift off in a driveway. When we install, the warranty is intact because a certified installer signed the anchor-torque and bleed sheet. When a customer installs and something goes wrong, the manufacturer can walk away from the claim. Read your warranty document the day the lift lands and file it where you can find it. Nobody remembers where they put paperwork three years later when a cable snaps.
Item 4: How a warranty claim actually works
When a warranty claim comes up on a lift we sold you, the process is: you call us, we ask a few diagnostic questions, we determine what part failed, we open the claim with the manufacturer, we ship the part to you (or drive it out), and the manufacturer either covers the part or credits us and we invoice you at cost. If it is a structural failure, the manufacturer typically sends a rep. If it is a wear part inside warranty, they replace it. If it is a wear part outside warranty, we still get you the part, just not on the manufacturer’s dime. The reason to buy from a dealer who installs and services is exactly this. Buying from an online-only seller and then trying to open a claim yourself is a long process. We have handled dozens of claims for customers along the Iowa-Missouri border and the process is smooth because we do it repeatedly.
Item 5: Anchors, slab, and installation quality
Most warranty claims that get denied are denied because the install failed. Anchors under-torqued, slab too thin, hydraulic lines bled improperly, safety locks not verified. When we install auto lifts for home garage and farm-shop use, we torque anchors to manufacturer spec (typically 90 to 110 ft-lb for 3/4 inch wedge anchors), verify slab is 4 inches minimum with 3,000 psi minimum concrete, bleed hydraulic lines until the cylinder cycles smoothly under load, and run the full safety-lock cycle five times before we call the install done. That paperwork gets filed with your warranty documentation. If something goes wrong five years in and the manufacturer asks whether install was to spec, we have the sheet. Farm-shop buyers who install their own lifts sometimes save on install cost but forfeit the paper trail that protects the warranty. That is almost always a losing trade.
Item 6: Parts availability five years out
The single best question a farm-shop buyer can ask is: five years from now, what does it look like when a cable needs replacing? For every lift we sell, the answer is: call us, we quote the part, it ships from a warehouse we can access within 48 hours. For lifts other dealers sell that we do not stock, the answer is sometimes 6 to 8 weeks and sometimes never. If you can only ask one question of any dealer on any brand, ask that one. Auto lifts for home garage and farm-shop duty are 15 to 20 year investments if they are serviced properly, and every one will need a cable or seal kit at some point in that lifespan. Buy the lift with the parts pipeline behind it, not the one that saved 8 percent on the ticket price.
Item 7: Delivery, install, and what to expect on day one
