Oil filter, drain plug, transmission pan, and differential are all reachable without moving anything. On a four-post, the vehicle rides up on its own tires, sitting on runways. To get to the drain plug you either work around the runways or you set rolling jacks and lift the axles clear. That is another minute or two per vehicle. Sequencing the Garage Build-Out
A small-fleet operator building out a home shop should sequence the install in this order: pour or verify the concrete, run the 220V electrical to the exact corner, drop the lift, then lay out the accessory equipment around it. A two-post lift wants roughly 12 feet of bay width for the columns and arm swing, and a full working aisle on at least one side. A four-post storage lift wants the vehicle length plus a runway approach, plus at least three feet on either side to walk. If your Cedar Rapids garage is 30 by 40 with 12-foot walls, both configurations fit, but the four-post eats the middle of the bay year-round even when the lift is down. Cables tend to be the wear item, typically replaced every 5 to 8 years depending on duty cycle. A four-post has four cables and typically one large cylinder. Four-post cables last a little longer per cable because the loading is more distributed, but you have four of them. The difference is in the failure mode. A two-post cable failure lowers the lift on its safety cams. A four-post cable failure engages the mechanical latches. Storage Flexibility
If you ever want a car parked under the lift while another one is in the air, the four-post wins hands down. That is the whole reason four-post storage lifts exist. On a two-post, the arms sweep the space under the lift while raising and lowering, so parking a second car under the lift is not safe. If you are strictly doing oil changes and fluid service on a fleet that comes in and out each day, storage is irrelevant and the two-post is faster. If you also want the option to leave a personal project car parked underneath overnight, the four-post is the only real answer.
