Week one: what the auto lifts for home garage conversation looked like

The Cedar Rapids shop owner called us on a Wednesday in June. They were an RV and trailer service business with an outbuilding used for parts storage and light service, and they’d decided to convert one bay into a full lift bay for CV axle work on their van fleet. First conversation lasted 40 minutes. We asked about building dimensions (30×50 pole barn, 12-foot sidewalls, 10 feet of clearance at the truss peak), floor age (2015 pour, 4.5 inches, rebar reinforced), electrical service (100-amp panel with 50 amps of headroom), heaviest vehicle they’d lift (a Sprinter van at around 9,000 pounds loaded), and their timeline (they wanted the lift running by mid-August, six weeks out).

Based on that, we spec’d a 10,000-pound asymmetric two-post from Rotary, the SPOA10, because it fit the ceiling, matched the vehicle mix, and gave them room to grow into heavier work if it came up. Weeks two through four: concrete, panel, ceiling

Weeks two through four were preparation. The owner already had good concrete, so we didn’t need to sawcut. They needed their electrician to add a dedicated 30-amp double-pole breaker and run 10-gauge wire about 60 feet from the panel to the lift location. That took about a day. Ceiling clearance was tight, 10 feet at the truss peak against the lift’s need for 11 feet 6 inches for full-height raise. We spec’d the low-ceiling variant of the SPOA10, which uses a shorter overhead bar and raises the vehicle to about 65 inches of working height versus 72 on the full-height version.

For CV axle work, 65 inches is plenty; you’re working under the front wheel wells, not the driveline. We coordinated with the electrician to finish their work by week three, then scheduled lift delivery for week four. When you order the lift before the electrician is scheduled, you often end up with a crated lift sitting in the driveway for two weeks. Delivery day: what actually happened

Delivery day was a Tuesday. The LTL carrier called the morning of with a two-hour window, and the driver showed up right in the middle of it. Our owner had rented a skid loader with pallet forks for the morning specifically to unload the crate, smart move because the LTL truck doesn’t come with a liftgate on standard freight rates. The crate weighed 2,100 pounds and came off the truck cleanly. The driver had the paperwork done in five minutes and was back on the road.

The owner used the skid loader to position the crate in the outbuilding bay, then broke it down to inspect the parts. Everything was accounted for against the packing list: two columns, arm sets, power unit, hydraulic lines, cables, safety locks, hardware kit, install manual. No shipping damage. Install day: five hours from crate to first cycle

Install day started at 7:30 AM. Two of our techs arrived with a truck full of tools, hammer drill, torque wrench, hydraulic bleeding equipment, level, chalk line, and a bucket of anchor bolts. First hour was column placement. We chalk-lined the bay layout, marked the anchor hole positions, drilled all eight holes (four per column) to the manufacturer’s spec depth, and vacuumed out the concrete dust. The customer wanted the driver’s side positioned toward the shop’s north wall to leave more open floor on the south side; we adjusted the layout accordingly.

Second hour was setting the columns. We stood them up, aligned them, dropped in the wedge anchors, and torqued to 125 foot-pounds per the manufacturer’s spec. Third hour was hydraulics. We ran the pressure lines between columns, connected the power unit, filled the reservoir with the specified fluid, and bled the system. Fourth hour was arms and cables. Cables threaded through the sheaves, arms bolted to the carriages, safety locks tested. Fifth hour was cycle testing, three empty cycles, two with a light pickup borrowed from the shop, one with the owner’s Sprinter van at full weight. Everything cycled clean. First month: what needed adjustment

First month, the shop reported two small issues. Issue one: the safety locks on the passenger-side column were catching slightly out of sync with the driver’s side, the passenger side would catch a full notch later. This is a cable-tension issue, common in the first 30 days as the cables stretch under initial use. We came back after 30 days, re-tensioned the cables, re-verified lock engagement, and it was fine from then on. Issue two: the hydraulic power unit was slower than the customer expected on cold mornings, takes about 90 seconds to raise a Sprinter van when the shop is 40 degrees inside.

We explained this is normal cold-weather behavior; hydraulic fluid thickens as it cools. Warm the shop or run the pump for a minute before loading, and rise time returns to spec. Neither issue was a warranty problem. Both were setup adjustments that happen on almost every install. The 30-day visit is the right time to catch them. Months three through six, the lift became routine. The shop was doing four to six CV axle jobs a week on the van fleet, plus incidental brake and suspension work. The Rotary handled it fine, Sprinter vans are near the top of what a 10,000-pound lift comfortably handles, but the SPOA10 has honest capacity and the safety locks are rated well beyond 10K. The owner did the daily visual inspection every morning (cable, arm pads, floor around anchors) and never found anything concerning. Hydraulic fluid stayed in the reservoir; no leaks. Cables looked good.

Anchor bolts, when we came back at 30 days for the re-torque, all took an additional 10 to 15 foot-pounds, completely normal seating behavior in the first month. After the re-torque, they’ll typically hold without further adjustment for years, but we recommend an annual visual check regardless. The shop’s productivity on CV axle work jumped meaningfully once the second bay was live. Before the lift, they were queueing van work on the main bay behind trailer service; after the lift, van work ran independently and shop throughput went up. Year one review: what we’d change

Year-one review, we asked the owner what they’d change. Their answer: nothing on the lift itself, but they’d wire the outbuilding for a compressor drop closer to the lift location. Currently their air line runs from the main shop building through an underground conduit and drops in the bay corner, which means the impact gun hose stretches across the bay. Not the lift’s fault, but the kind of small planning miss that shows up during the first year of real use. Second thing they’d change: they’d order a slightly heavier-duty arm pad set for the Sprinter’s lower pinch welds.

Standard pads work fine, but the Sprinter’s frame contact is more concentrated than the pad size, and after a year of use the pads show more wear than expected. We’re supplying replacement pads under warranty. Third thing they’d change: they’d add a floor drain in the bay. Fluid changes and brake work generate spilled fluid, and cleanup would be easier with a drain. None of these are lift issues, they’re shop-layout issues that showed up once the lift was in daily use.
