A body shop foreman out of Urbandale called us last month about auto lifts for home garage use, but with a real restoration twist: he was moving his side business out of a rented bay into his own three-stall attached garage and wanted to run panel replacement, media blasting prep, and rust repair from home on nights and weekends. That is a different lift conversation than the average DIYer who wants to change his oil dry. Restoration work means you spend hours under the car with sanders, welders, and cutting wheels, and the lift becomes a workbench you stand under. Here is the buyer’s guide we walked him through, and it applies to anyone thinking about serious auto lifts for home garage restoration duty.

Start with the vehicles, not the lift model number
The first thing we ask any restoration buyer is what he actually plans to work on. A 1967 Camaro is very different from a 2019 F-250, and the lift you want for one is not the same lift you want for the other. Classic muscle cars and squarebody trucks have simple frames and easy pinch-weld pad points. Modern trucks are heavy, have complex undertrays, and the factory pad points are sometimes tucked behind splash shields. The lift you buy has to match the vehicles you actually work on ninety percent of the time, not the one dream project you might tackle once.
Our Urbandale foreman had a mix. His own daily was a modern SUV, but the projects rolling through were mostly 60s and 70s American iron. We spec’d a 10,000-pound symmetric two-post with three-stage arms. That gave him the reach for a short-wheelbase Camaro pad point and the capacity for a full-size Suburban restoration if one came in. If he had told us he wanted to work on lifted diesels, we would have gone 12,000 pounds and taller columns. Pick the lift for the fleet, not just the flagship.
Site survey: what we measured before quoting
Any honest quote on auto lifts for home garage installs starts with a site survey, either in person or over a detailed photo and video call. We need slab thickness, ceiling height at the lowest point of the truss run, garage door track height, and the width between whatever obstructions are already in the bay. His three-stall was 24 feet deep and 11 feet 8 to the truss bottom. That was the tight number, and it drove everything else.
With 11 feet 8 of usable height we had two paths. Option one was a standard overhead two-post with a low-clearance conversion that drops the crossbar to roughly 11 feet 6, giving us just enough room. Option two was a floor-plate two-post that runs the equalization line through a floor channel instead of overhead. He hated the idea of a floor obstruction where he would be dragging cutting torches and welders, so overhead low-clearance it was. We also verified his garage door tracks tucked up high enough that the swing arms would clear when the door was open. That is a check we make every single time and one homeowners forget every single time.
Slab prep and anchor strategy for restoration work
Restoration work vibrates. Angle grinders, DA sanders, hammers, and cutting tools all put small repeated loads into a lift that a routine oil change never does. That matters because anchor bolts loosen slightly over time under vibration if they were not installed correctly the first time. Our standard is to torque to spec, mark the nut with a paint pen, and check the mark at the six-month inspection. If the paint line has moved, we know the anchor moved with it and we address it.
His slab was four inches, poured about a decade ago, and in good shape. We test-drilled a pilot hole in the corner of where a column would land and pulled a core sample. Full-depth pour, no voids. That let us use standard wedge anchors at full torque. If we had hit a void or hollow, we would have moved to adhesive anchors rated for cracked concrete. On any lift install we do, if we find a bad spot we tell you before we bolt anything down. Nothing is worse than finding out a year later that the anchor never had the concrete it needed. Slab work is one-shot. Do it right.
Arm geometry for panel and rust work
When you are welding a floor pan or grinding out rust from a rocker, you are standing under the car for a long time and you want the arms out of your way. That is a small but real point in favor of asymmetric geometry for restoration duty. Asymmetric arms push the vehicle behind the column centerline so the arms are angled behind the door pillars, giving you cleaner access to the rocker and the floor pan area from the sides. If you have ever bumped a swing arm with your shoulder while running a MIG, you know exactly why this matters.
For his case we still recommended symmetric, and here is why. He was going to lift a mix of vehicles, some of which were tail-heavy classics with the engine set well back. Symmetric loading kept the center of gravity balanced on the columns. Asymmetric would have been fine for modern front-heavy cars but marginal on some of the projects. In restoration land we default to symmetric unless the shop bay is narrow enough that door clearance forces the issue. Power, air, and welding circuits to plan around
Body shops draw serious power. A 220V lift motor is the smallest thing on the panel. Add a 240V welder, a 3 HP compressor for air tools and blasting, and a plasma cutter, and you have a real electrical plan. We told him to spec a dedicated 100-amp subpanel in the garage before we set the lift, and to run home runs for each major tool rather than daisy-chaining outlets. Every restoration shop we have installed lifts in that skimped on electrical regretted it inside a year.
Compressed air is the other one. Media blasting eats CFM. If you plan to blast anything more than small parts, a two-stage 60-gallon compressor is a minimum and an 80-gallon is better. Plumb air with hard line, not rubber hose, and drop a couple of drops near the lift columns for impact tools and air chisels. We can also mount the lift power unit on a wall bracket instead of the standard floor-plate mount so you gain floor space for a tool cabinet. Small touches like that are the difference between a garage that works and a garage that fights you.
Ventilation and the fumes nobody talks about
Restoration work generates fumes: welding smoke, primer overspray, thinner vapors, and blasting dust. In a commercial shop you have an OSHA-driven ventilation plan. At home, most guys skip it, and they should not. We recommend at minimum an exhaust fan sized for a full air change every ten minutes, an intake vent on the opposite wall for makeup air, and a portable fume extractor near the welder. If you are doing bodywork under a lift, those fumes rise straight into your face because you are working overhead.
None of this changes the lift itself, but it changes how you use it. We have watched restoration guys spec the perfect lift and then hate their garage because they could not breathe in it. Do the ventilation plan at the same time as the lift plan. If your electrician is running conduit anyway, have him drop a switch for a ceiling exhaust fan. If your HVAC is being reworked, add a return in the garage. It is cheaper to do this once than to retrofit later.
Install day: what to expect from us
A standard two-post install at a home garage takes us a full day, sometimes two if the electrical is not ready or if we have to grout a slab pad. We arrive with the lift, the anchor kit, torque wrenches, and a bubble level long enough to span the columns. We unload, mark the anchor pattern with the columns dry-set, drill, anchor, plumb, hang the crossbar, thread the equalization cables, and pressurize the hydraulic system. Then we cycle the lift empty three times, check every locking position, and put a car on it to verify.
