What a Sioux City Site Survey Actually Involves

Before we quote anyone on auto lifts for home garage installs, we drive out and look at the bay in person whenever we can. On this Sioux City job we measured the concrete thickness with a hammer drill in the corner, checked ceiling height at three points across the truss line, and confirmed that the overhead door tracks would clear a two-post carriage at full extension. The owner had assumed his slab was four inches thick because that was what the builder told him during pole-barn construction.

We found five and a half inches in the outer bay and four in the newer addition, which was good news for the planned two-post location but would have been bad news if he had wanted the lift in the second bay. We also mapped the electrical panel run distance, noted that his 200-amp service could handle a 240V single-phase motor with room to spare, and flagged the floor drain running down the center of the shop. That drain would have sat directly under one column if he had set the lift where he originally planned. A twenty-minute site walk saved him a thousand-dollar repositioning job after concrete was already poured over anchor bolts. Every home-garage lift install we do has one or two of these gotchas, and phone measurements never catch all of them.

The Ceiling Height Reality in Iowa Pole Barns

Twelve-foot side walls sound like plenty until you actually run the numbers on a two-post. Most standard-column two-post auto lifts for home garage use want somewhere between eleven feet six inches and twelve feet six inches under the crossbar or overhead cable manager. That Sioux City shop had a twelve-foot exterior wall, but the truss chord dropped the usable center height to eleven feet nine. We measured it three times to be sure.

We ended up recommending a symmetric baseplate two-post instead of an overhead style. The baseplate design keeps everything below chest height on the arms, so nothing crosses the ceiling and the trusses stay out of the equation entirely. He gained back roughly eighteen inches of usable lift travel, which meant his fully-built overlanding truck with a rooftop tent still had room to spin the wheels for a rotor swap. If you have twelve-foot walls with any truss drop, we almost always steer toward baseplate here in the Midwest, and it is one of the most common questions we get from Sioux City through Council Bluffs. Slab Thickness and Anchor Prep for Two-Post Installs

Every two-post in our home garage lineup has a minimum slab thickness stamped on the install manual, and skipping that spec is the single fastest way to void your warranty. For most 9,000 to 10,000 pound two-posts we sell, the manufacturer wants at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with no cracks running under the column pads. Anything thinner and you are either pouring a footing under each column or picking a different lift.

On this Sioux City build the outer bay was strong enough as-is, so we drilled anchor holes on install day rather than pre-planning footings. We used the manufacturer’s exact anchor spec, torqued to the marked value with a calibrated wrench, and re-checked every anchor after the lift cycled loaded for the first time. That re-torque step is not optional, and it is one of the things we always coach DIY installers on when they buy an unassembled lift from us. The other detail people miss is where the anchor bolts land relative to control joints in the slab. A bolt set six inches from a saw-cut joint will pop out under load within a year. We shift the column footprint whenever we can to stay away from those seams, and if we cannot shift, we tell the customer to plan a footing pour before we ever schedule an install.

Why Brake Service Changed the Lift Choice

The original request was a four-post storage lift because he had two vehicles and wanted to park one over the other. But the moment he told us his real weekly use was brake pads, rotors, and the occasional caliper swap, we walked him off that idea. Four-post lifts with the runways in place are miserable for wheel-off work. You either buy sliding jacks and add another two thousand dollars to the ticket, or you fight the runways every time you want a caliper out.

A two-post gets the wheels hanging free the second the arms are set, and for a home garage owner who is doing his own brake service on two or three vehicles the ergonomics are simply better. We asked him how often he honestly parked a car above another car and he admitted maybe twice a year for a road-trip shuffle. That is not a four-post use case, that is a two-post with a floor jack use case. He ended up with the two-post and a good hydraulic jack, spent about the same as a mid-tier four-post kit would have cost him, and gained ten times the brake-service comfort. That kind of honest conversation is what we try to have with every buyer before they lock in a footprint they will live with for twenty years.

Overlanding Rigs and the Weight-Rating Question

His main vehicle was a full-size half-ton pickup built out for overlanding with a bed rack, a rooftop tent, dual batteries, and a bumper winch. Curb weight had climbed from around 5,400 pounds stock to roughly 6,800 pounds loaded. When we hear seven thousand pounds we do not sell a seven-thousand-pound lift. We sell nine or ten thousand, because the rated capacity of a two-post has to cover the heaviest vehicle you will ever put on it plus a real safety margin plus load-balance error.

The 9,000-pound two-post class is the sweet spot for almost every overlanding, off-road, and heavy-half-ton home garage customer we deal with in western Iowa. It gives you thirty to forty percent headroom over a maxed-out modern half-ton, it handles a modest three-quarter-ton diesel for most jobs, and it costs only marginally more than the 7,000-pound entry-level units. When customers ask us why we do not push the cheapest lift, that is the reason. Buying too light is the single most common regret we hear from second-time home garage lift buyers. If you are ever going to add a diesel truck or a full-size van to the household, buy the capacity now and forget about it. The Sioux City customer went with a 10,000-pound rating and has never worried about it since.

Electrical Runs From the Panel to the Motor

His electrical panel sat on the far wall from the planned lift location, about thirty-eight feet away as the wire runs. Standard 240V single-phase two-post motors will handle a run that long on 10-gauge wire with a 30-amp breaker, and that was the recommendation we sent his electrician. He had originally been quoted for a 20-amp circuit on 12-gauge, which would have worked on paper but would have tripped breakers every time the motor started under a fully-loaded lift.

We always spec conservative on the circuit because a motor that nuisance-trips is a motor that gets abused by owners who keep resetting the breaker and cycling it back on. That behavior kills contactors and windings inside a year or two. Thirty amps costs almost nothing more to run than twenty at pole-barn distances, and it gives you room for a hoist reel, a small compressor on the same circuit, or a future welder outlet without redoing the wire. Most home garage owners underestimate what their shop electrical will grow into over ten years, and adding a properly sized run at build-out is dramatically cheaper than trenching or re-pulling later. His electrician thanked us for pre-specifying it because it eliminated a back-and-forth about which breaker to install, and the whole install passed inspection the first time.

What Final Install Day Actually Looked Like

Install day for the Sioux City job ran about six hours from the time our truck backed into the driveway to the time we handed him the keys and the manual. Two of our installers unloaded the columns and carriage, hammer-drilled anchor holes, set and torqued the anchors, ran the hydraulic lines, bled the system, and put a scrap Chevy under it for the load-cycle test before he ever touched a control. That test cycle is where we watch for slow leaks, listen for anchor movement, and confirm that both carriages track true to each other under real weight.

We coached him on the daily and monthly checks he needs to do: greasing carriage rollers, watching cable tension, and looking for hydraulic weeps around the cylinder rod seal. We also walked him through arm-restraint gear engagement, which is the safety detail that keeps arms from swinging out from under a lifted vehicle. Since then he has done two brake jobs on the pickup, a full set of tires on his wife’s SUV, and a suspension refresh on a project car that showed up at his door.
