A dealership service manager in southeast Iowa asked us about auto lifts for home garage use because he wanted to move his personal-vehicle oil changes and fluid service out of the dealership after-hours and into his own detached shop. He’d spent 20 years walking the service floor of a big-store franchise operation, so his questions weren’t about whether a lift was worth it — they were about bay layout, tool workflow, and how to make a home shop feel like the professional environment he was used to without spending professional money. Bay dimensions: what a two-post actually needs
A two-post lift with a full-size pickup on it occupies a footprint of roughly 12 feet wide by 20 feet deep by 12 feet tall in working position. That’s including the door-open swing of the truck, the arm sweep of the lift, and the walk-around clearance to get past the front of the vehicle. If you jam a two-post into a bay that’s only 10 feet wide, you can still park a car on it — but you can’t open the driver’s door with the vehicle raised, which makes the workflow miserable. We ask for 12 feet of clear width per bay at a minimum for auto lifts for home garage use.
Depth is the second dimension. A long-bed crew-cab pickup is about 22 feet nose-to-tail. Add 4 feet of nose clearance for the tool cart and 4 feet of tail clearance for the parts bench, and you’re at 30 feet of usable bay depth. That’s why the dealership manager’s 40-foot-deep shop was such a nice fit — he had bay depth to spare, which let us push the lift back from the door to leave a full workstation at the front. Shops that are only 24 feet deep can still run a two-post, but the tool cart lives outside the bay.
Two-bay vs. one-bay: workflow trade-offs
His shop was 32 feet wide by 40 feet deep, which is enough for two lift bays side-by-side. We ran the layout both ways — one bay with a lift plus one open drive-through bay, and two bays each with their own lift. He landed on one lift plus one open bay, which is the more common home-shop answer. Reasoning: he’ll only ever have one vehicle up in the air at a time, and the open bay doubles as a wheeled-storage staging area, a welding zone, and a place to park a car overnight without moving the lift.
The two-lift build is worth it if you actually service two vehicles at once, which requires a helper. For a solo operator, it’s overkill. For a family shop where two members work on cars together, it starts to make sense. We asked him if his teenage kids were going to be in the shop with him — the answer was "maybe, but they’ll be under a hood in the open bay, not on their own lift." That closed the decision. Real dimensions: the 32×40 build-out
Here’s the actual layout we built. The two-post lift went on the north wall of the shop, columns 10 feet apart on center, with 4 feet of clear between the driver-side column and the north wall. Six feet of clear between the passenger-side column and the middle of the shop. Bay was 12 feet wide from north wall to center of the shop. Tool cart lived at the front of the bay against the west (garage door) wall. Parts bench and stationary shelving lived along the north wall behind the driver-side column. The open bay ran along the south wall of the shop, 20 feet wide, with a workbench and welding station along the south wall.
Electrical came in from a subpanel on the east wall of the shop, with a 30-amp 220V circuit running overhead to the driver-side column of the lift and a disconnect box mounted at eye level on the east wall opposite the lift. Compressed air ran along the north wall with drops at the tool cart and at the lift. Lighting was 8 LED shop lights in a 4-by-2 grid, giving even light with no shadows under the lift. Oil-change and fluid-service workflow
The dealership manager runs about 30 oil changes a year across his family fleet — his own truck, his wife’s SUV, his kids’ cars, and his mom’s sedan. On a two-post, an oil change takes about 15 minutes if the drain plug is accessible from below without a shield. Roll the vehicle onto the arms, swing the arms to the pinch weld, lift to chest height, drain plug out, filter off, new filter and plug on, drop and refill. The vehicle spends maybe 10 minutes at working height. Total shop time including pull-in and pull-out is 20 minutes.
Compare that to doing the same job on ramps or a floor jack in a home garage: 45 minutes minimum, awkward posture, contortion under the vehicle, and a real risk of missing a leak or a loose fitting because you can’t see the underside clearly. The lift pays back in ergonomics before it pays back in labor time. For auto lifts for home garage use where the owner is doing 20-plus fluid services a year, that’s real value. His personal calculation was that if he’d add up all his own after-hours home service, the lift paid back in three years.
Tool cart placement and lift-bay ergonomics
One thing the dealership floor gets right and most home shops get wrong: the tool cart lives at the FRONT of the vehicle, not to the side. When the vehicle is up in the air, the technician walks around the front to get to the other side. That path needs to be clear of the tool cart. Tools live within arm’s reach when standing at the driver-side or passenger-side of the raised vehicle, but the cart itself is parked out of the walking path. It sounds trivial. It’s not. Tripping over your own tool cart with an impact in your hand is how home-shop injuries happen.
The other ergonomic detail is trash. The dealership floor has a shop-vac drop and a used-oil catch within 6 feet of every lift. Home shops rarely think about waste management until they’ve done a few oil changes and have quart bottles piling up. We recommend a 5-gallon used-oil drum on a rolling cart, a shop-vac permanently mounted on a bracket, and a shop-towel bin within reach of the lift. Those three things make the bay run like a real shop instead of a hobby space. Auto lifts for home garage buyers who take workflow seriously come out ahead in the long run.
Compressed air and lighting: the two upgrades everyone forgets
Compressed air is the upgrade every home-shop owner underestimates. A 60-gallon vertical compressor with a 5 HP single-phase motor is enough to run one impact and one blow-gun. If you want to run an air ratchet AND an impact AND a die grinder in sequence, step up to an 80-gallon two-stage. Plumb the air with 3/4-inch black iron or PEX-Al-PEX along the wall, with quarter-turn ball valves at each drop and a moisture trap at the low point. The compressor lives in a separate small room or on the OTHER side of a wall from the lift, because compressor noise in the same bay as the lift is unpleasant.
Lighting is the other one. Cheap fluorescent T8s in a metal-building shop give you 3,000 lumens per fixture and cast shadows under the lift. Modern LED shop lights in the 6,000 to 8,000 lumen range mounted in a proper grid give you shadow-free light under a raised vehicle. Budget for 4 to 8 fixtures per bay depending on ceiling height. For auto lifts for home garage builds where the owner will be under the vehicle for hours at a time, the lighting upgrade is the highest-return dollar in the whole build. Skimp on this and the whole shop feels amateur.
What we deliver on install day
Install day in a well-prepared shop like the dealership manager’s runs about six hours. We arrive with the lift crated on a lift-gate truck, uncrate in the open bay, walk components to the north-wall lift location, lay out anchor pattern on the slab, hammer-drill the anchors, set columns, plumb and level, install the overhead bar and shut-off cable, connect the hydraulic lines and equalization cables, wire the power unit to the pre-run 220V drop, and cycle-test with a real vehicle from his fleet. We hand him the manual, the certification tag, and the anchor torque spec on paper.
What we don’t do on install day is the shop layout, the lighting install, the compressor plumbing, or the tool-cart selection. Those are the customer’s build-out, and they matter as much as the lift itself. We’ll consult on any of it if asked.
