Year fifteen: full cable and sheave inspection, occasionally another cable set, and a hydraulic pump seal kit — call it $400 in parts and labor. Years sixteen through twenty: routine maintenance only, unless the lift has been abused. Total 20-year cost of ownership on a $6,900 lift, honestly maintained, comes in around $8,500 to $9,200 — an average of $425 to $460 per year — assuming zero catastrophic failures, which is realistic for ALI-certified equipment maintained on a normal schedule. Compare that to the $180 he reclaims on every CV axle job and the math is not even close.

What breaks, when, and what the parts run

Nothing on a well-built two-post fails randomly, and knowing what to expect makes the ownership boring. Hydraulic hoses: expect one to weep between years 8 and 12; the fix is a $40 replacement hose and 20 minutes. Solenoid coils: one may fail between years 10 and 15; the coil is about $85 and swaps in 15 minutes. Cables: consumable, replace at year 10 whether they look bad or not — $180 for a full set. Sheaves: usually last the full 20 years; if one is grooved at year 15, it is about $65. Safety-lock latches: never really wear out; occasionally get sticky from dirty grease and need a clean-and-re-lube.

Hydraulic pump: often lasts 25 or more years; a seal kit runs $75 and buys another decade. Power unit motor: rarely fails on residential-duty lifts; when it does, a replacement is about $350. Arm restraints and truck adapters: expect scrapes and paint wear but no functional failure. Total move cost of $1,600 to $1,800 versus buying a new $7,500 lift makes the move-with-you math almost always right for lifts under 15 years old. If he sold it instead, the used sale would net him about half the current new price, and he could apply that toward a fresh lift at the new address. Either way, the residual value on auto lifts for home garage service is real and consistent. This is very different from a lot of tool categories, where resale is a fraction of retail. The lift is one of the few pieces of shop equipment that actually holds value.

What twenty years of ownership actually looks like
