That question comes up on almost every serious home-shop build we quote. The answer isn’t the same for a full-time restoration project as it is for oil changes and tire rotations. What the two configurations actually are
An overhead-style two-post lift ties the two columns together at the top with a horizontal crossbar that carries the hydraulic hose and the equalization cable. That crossbar sits above the vehicle, so it can bump the roof, an antenna, or a roof rack if the ceiling is too low. A baseplate-style two-post routes those same components through a plate that sits on the floor between the columns, so nothing spans the top. The columns stand alone. That’s the whole difference on paper.
In practice the difference shows up in three ways: usable ceiling height, drive-through width when moving tall trucks, and cable-service access. Overhead lifts have a lower rise ceiling because the crossbar limits how high the carriages can travel. Baseplate lifts give you full column rise but you drive over the plate every time you pull a vehicle in. For most auto lifts for home garage restoration builds in northeast Iowa, the ceiling geometry drives which style makes sense, not personal preference.
Ceiling height math in a pole barn
Most pole barns around Dubuque and Delaware County were built with 12-foot side walls and truss chords that hang down another 8 to 16 inches at the low point over the drive path. That gives you a real clear-ceiling number of roughly 10 feet 8 inches to 11 feet 4 inches. An overhead-style two-post needs about 12 feet from floor to underside of the crossbar to give a mid-size sedan full lift height. A baseplate two-post can lift the same vehicle in 11 feet of ceiling because there’s no crossbar in the way.
For pickup and full-size SUV restoration work — the specific use case the fleet manager described — the math gets worse fast. A restored 3/4-ton pickup at full lift height needs 13 to 14 feet of ceiling under an overhead lift, or 11 to 12 feet under a baseplate lift. If you’re working on tall municipal trucks, the baseplate style is usually the only workable answer in a standard pole barn. The safety trade-off you have to understand
The safety difference between the two styles is small but real. Overhead lifts have a top-mounted shutoff bar — a physical bar or cable that stops the lift when the vehicle’s roof contacts it. That’s a nice belt-and-suspenders safety feature that catches a distracted operator who forgets a roof rack or an antenna. Baseplate lifts don’t have that shutoff because there’s nothing overhead to hit. The operator is 100 percent responsible for watching the top of the vehicle as it rises.
For a restoration bay where you’re working alone at night and the same operator is running the controls and eyeballing the clearance, that shutoff bar earns its keep. But it’s not a reason to force an overhead lift into a bay that can’t accommodate the ceiling. A baseplate lift with a disciplined pre-lift walkaround is just as safe. What’s not safe is trying to squeeze an overhead lift into a pole barn where the crossbar is going to sit inches under the truss chord and force you to stop the carriages short of full lift on every ticket.
Restoration and metal work: the special-case considerations
Restoration and metal work add two wrinkles that don’t show up on tire-rotation jobs. First is welding clearance under the vehicle. When you’re MIG-welding a floor pan or a rocker panel from below, you need the vehicle high enough that you can stand under it with a helmet on and swing a body-hammer without your knuckles hitting the floor. That means full column rise, which favors baseplate lifts in most Iowa pole barns.
Second is sparks and slag. If you’re grinding or plasma-cutting under a vehicle on any auto lifts for home garage setup, keep the hydraulic hoses out of the drop-zone. On an overhead lift, the crossbar puts hoses directly over the vehicle where slag can hit them. On a baseplate lift, the hoses run through the floor plate and up the columns — safely out of the vertical slag path. For a serious restoration bay, that hose-routing detail is another point in favor of the baseplate style. Neither hose type will explode from a stray spark, but a slag-scarred hose is a slow leak waiting to happen a year later.
Vehicle mix on a municipal restoration project
The Dubuque fleet manager was planning to restore two retired pickups and a former DPW van, then work on his own personal vehicles between projects. That’s a mixed vehicle-height fleet, and the baseplate lift handles that mix better because you’re not constantly nose-diving into the crossbar. You lift the van, back it out, run the pickup in, lift, back out. No mental math about roof clearance on every ticket.

Concrete requirements are the same for both styles
People assume overhead lifts have different concrete requirements than baseplate lifts because of the crossbar, and that’s not true. Both styles anchor into the slab under each column. The overhead crossbar carries load only when the lift is at max height and the equalization cable is taut. The slab spec — 4.25 inches of 3,000-PSI concrete minimum for consumer two-posts — is the same for either configuration. What changes is that the baseplate model has one extra anchor location under the floor plate itself, though that anchor is not carrying vertical load.
If you’re pouring a new pole-barn slab, our concrete spec is 5 inches of 4,000-PSI with rebar on 12-inch centers under the lift footprint. That’s a small premium over a stock shop-floor pour and pays for itself in warranty coverage and long-term slab integrity. If you’re retrofitting into an existing pole barn, get a core sample or drill a test hole at each planned column location before you order the lift.
