We’d be doing you a disservice if we made this sound like overhead always wins. Baseplate 2-post lifts have real advantages for home garage shops, especially ones without a clear 12-foot ceiling. Installation is generally faster since there’s no overhead beam to hang, and the anchoring pattern is more forgiving on older or thinner slabs because the load path runs straight down through the base rather than through overhead columns pulling on anchors near the top of the post.
Baseplate units also tend to be a better fit if you’re storing a second vehicle underneath, since there’s nothing overhead to worry about when it comes to exhaust systems, roof racks, or tall cargo boxes swinging past a beam. If your off-road build changes over the years — bigger tires, a roof top tent, a snorkel — a baseplate lift doesn’t care, because there’s nothing up top to hit. For shops with 10 to 11 foot ceilings this is often the only real option, and it’s a perfectly capable one.
Storing One Vehicle On the Lift, One Underneath
A big part of why our east-central Iowa customer wanted auto lifts for home garage storage, not just service work, was space. His 30×40 pole building needed to function as both a shop and a two-vehicle garage. With a 7,000-pound-or-under passenger vehicle rating, a properly installed 2-post lift can hold a vehicle raised indefinitely while a second vehicle parks underneath, effectively doubling his usable floor space.
