An off-road builder we worked with along the Iowa-Illinois corridor put in a 30 by 40 pole barn last spring, called us about auto lifts for home garage oil service and fluid work, and gave us permission to write up the install as a case study. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, and this article walks through exactly how the job went from first phone call through final walkthrough, including the overhead-versus-baseplate decision, the anchor work, the model choice, and the total cost. The first phone call and the initial spec conversation
The owner called us in March with a fairly complete picture already. New 30-by-40 pole barn, six-inch reinforced slab going in with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, 14-foot side walls with a 12-foot overhead door on the gable end, primary vehicles a full-size Ram diesel and a built Jeep on 37s. Use case was oil service, fluid changes, occasional exhaust, and the ability to store the Jeep overhead in winter so the Ram could live inside on the ground. That is a well-defined ask and it dictated most of the answer in the first five minutes.
For the primary lift we specced a Rotary SPO12 two-post 12,000-pound asymmetric with three-stage front arms and truck adapters, sized for the diesel and the built Jeep both. For the storage question, we sketched a separate parking arrangement rather than a four-post over the top, because the ceiling clearance for a Jeep on 37s over a truck was tighter than the barn allowed. We routed the whole conversation on a single sketch of the barn footprint and had the quote in his inbox by that evening.
Overhead versus baseplate for a 14-foot pole barn
With 14 feet of side wall and truss ceilings that ran higher in the middle, overhead columns were the obvious choice. The Rotary SPO12 in the overhead configuration puts the shutoff bar at about 12 feet above the slab and gives roughly 78 inches of pad-to-pad rise, which is plenty for a diesel pickup to reach standing height. The overhead crossbar keeps the working area between the columns completely clear at floor level, which matters when you are rolling a transmission jack or a floor jack under the vehicle.
Baseplate would have been the answer if the ceiling had been 10 feet, and we install that configuration constantly in attached garages elsewhere in the corridor. In a pole barn with room to spare, there is no reason to accept the floor plate. Overhead is the cleaner working environment. For any auto lifts for home garage build where the ceiling is 12 feet or more, we default to overhead unless there is a specific reason not to. The pole barn made this a one-line decision.
Slab prep and the six-inch pour
The owner had already scheduled the slab pour before the lift decision was final, which is the right order. We gave the concrete contractor the anchor pattern and load specs for the SPO12 so the rebar layout in the anchor zones was dense enough to handle the column base loads. Six inches with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers is generous for a home shop and it lets us anchor anywhere in the footprint without worrying about a thin spot. The concrete came in at a full 30-day cure before we drilled.
Cure time is not optional. We do not drill into green concrete because the anchor holding strength is a fraction of what it will be at 28 days, and we do not compromise on this even when a customer is impatient. In this case the timing worked out perfectly because the freight arrived three weeks after the pour and the install day was on day 32. Anchor drilling went into fully cured concrete and every anchor pulled to full torque without a single reset. That is what a proper slab prep buys you.
Install day: what actually happens
We arrived at 8 AM with the SPO12 already crated and staged on our flatbed. Two technicians rolled the columns off the truck, positioned them on the layout marks, plumbed each column with a magnetic level, and marked anchor points. Anchor drilling for the eight anchors per column took under an hour with a proper rotary hammer. Anchors were set, torqued to spec with a calibrated torque wrench, and each torque value was recorded on the install sheet.
From there the sequence was hydraulic power unit mount, hose routing through the overhead crossbar, cylinder connection, hydraulic fill and bleed, equalizer cable installation and tensioning, arm installation, arm restraint gear alignment, and safety-lock function test. Total time from arrival to first load raise was about six hours, which is standard for a two-post commercial install with no complications. We ran the lift up empty, then under the Ram at low height, then to full height with locks engaged. Every function checked out.
The oil service configuration and the drip tray decision
For oil service specifically, we added a crossbeam drip tray and an air-hose reel on one of the columns. The drip tray catches gear oil, engine oil, and fluid spatter during service so the slab stays clean and you are not chasing drips across the shop. It is a small option and worth every dollar in a shop where the same slab has to serve as a general working surface. The air-hose reel keeps the compressed air line off the floor and out of the arm swing path, which is the small quality-of-life detail that separates a professional home shop from a hobbyist bay.
We also spec’d a set of truck adapters in the frame-cradle style for the Ram’s factory pinch welds and separate stackable pads for the Jeep. Modern factory pinch welds on a diesel pickup often need the taller adapter to clear the plastic body cladding, and the Jeep with body-mount lift needs a different pad height entirely. Buying both sets at install time meant every vehicle in the shop had a proper pad-up procedure from day one. Total cost and the delivery break-down
The SPO12 lift itself, freight, and install landed in the upper end of the mid-single-digit thousands, all in. Adapters and options added a few hundred more. The concrete slab was not included in our quote because the pole barn contractor did that as part of the base build, but we shared the load specs with him and it added negligible cost to the pour. Total lift-related spend was well under ten thousand dollars for a fully installed 12,000-pound commercial-grade lift with the accessories.
Over the twenty-plus year life of that lift, the annual cost is a rounding error. The owner uses the lift several times a month for oil changes, fluid service, and general maintenance on both vehicles, and the time savings against a floor jack on a rebuilt Jeep are meaningful even in the first year. This is the pattern we see across the corridor: a well-specced auto lifts for home garage install pays back its cost in convenience and vehicle longevity long before the lift itself needs any real service. The math is favorable and the daily experience is better.
What we would change for a similar future install
Honestly, very little. If we did this exact build again we might spec extended-height columns to give another foot of pad-to-pad rise, which would let the diesel come up a little higher for taller-technician comfort. We might also add a column-mounted work light kit, which is inexpensive at install and expensive to add later. Otherwise the configuration worked and the owner has called back only once, to order a spare set of arm pad rubbers because his originals were still fine but he wanted them on the shelf.
For a corridor buyer planning a similar pole-barn build, the recipe is repeatable. Six-inch slab with proper rebar. Overhead two-post at 10,000 or 12,000 pounds depending on your vehicle mix. Three-stage arms and truck adapters. A drip tray, an air reel, and stackable pads. Full cure before drilling. Install by a real installer with a calibrated torque wrench. Follow that recipe and you will spend a comfortable amount of money once and have a lift that outlasts the pole barn. That is exactly what happened in this case study and it is what we recommend every time.
