Where the Decision Tree Really Starts

For a restoration project the tree does not start with the lift model, it starts with the building. Cedar Rapids garages built in the last decade usually pour a four-inch slab with wire mesh, which is the minimum most manufacturers list, but restoration cars often push closer to the seven-thousand-pound rating on the vehicle plus the ratchet load on the arms. Before we ever quote a lift we ask three questions: what is your slab thickness and did it cure at 3,000 PSI or better, what is your true ceiling clear height with lights hung, and what is the width of the bay you are willing to give up permanently.

Only after those three data points come back do we start ruling models in or out. Used vs New — When a Trade-In Actually Makes Sense

That said, used lifts are only a real deal when three things are true: the columns are structurally straight and unpitted, the cables and hydraulic hoses are within their service life, and the lift comes from a brand whose parts are still made. A twenty-year-old off-brand two-post with mystery cables is not a bargain at any price. A five-year-old Rotary or Challenger with documented service history often is.

Where used lifts fall apart is the safety-critical wear items. Cables have a service interval whether they look worn or not. Hydraulic seals swell and start weeping after a decade in a cold Iowa garage. Arm-lock latches wear at the tooth and skip under load, which is exactly when you do not want them to skip. When we sell a used lift we replace cables, rebuild the power unit, and swap arm-lock cassettes as a package, and that rebuild is where a lot of the imagined savings evaporate. New lifts come with the current warranty, current parts pipeline, and a factory install manual matched to the serial number.

Two-Post vs Four-Post for Restoration and Storage

The two-post asymmetric versus four-post debate is the fork that separates restoration hobbyists into two camps. Two-post gives you unrestricted access to the underside of the car — wheels off, exhaust hanging, differential exposed, brake lines routed clean. That access is why every serious wrenching hobbyist wants one. The trade-off is that a two-post concentrates all of the load into two columns and demands more from your slab, and it will not safely store a second car underneath for months on end.

Four-post auto lifts for home garage duty flip those trade-offs. Two runways carry the vehicle, four columns spread the load, and the car sits on its own tires with no arm contact. You can leave a car parked up there for an Iowa winter and not worry about frame-contact rust or shifted pads. What you give up is easy wheel-off work. Some hobbyists solve this with a rolling bridge jack that drops between the runways — that setup is common on our Cedar Rapids installs — and it lets a four-post do most of what a two-post does at the cost of a little floor space and about twelve hundred dollars in extra hardware. If you can only own one lift and you want both storage and maintenance, we usually push toward a four-post with a bridge jack.

Differential Fluid Service and Why Reach Matters

Differential fluid service looks like nothing on paper and becomes a mess without the right lift geometry. You need the wheels off the ground, the diff cover accessible, and enough vertical room to drop a fluid pan under the housing without dumping it on your shins. On a two-post that means the arms need to reach the pinch welds cleanly and the vehicle needs to rise high enough that the diff cover is at shoulder height, not floor height. On a four-post it means the runways need to be spaced correctly and the bridge jack needs to lift the axle just enough to unload the shocks so the drain angle is right.

For restoration cars — solid-axle muscle in particular — the diff hangs low and the pumpkin is a big target that eats knuckles when your workspace is cramped. On the Rotary two-posts we install most often, the arm locks click every two to two-and-a-half inches, which means you can dial in exactly the working height that clears the diff pan and lets you stand up straight while you drain. That ergonomic control is one of the underrated arguments for a real lift over a set of jack stands, and it shows up on every differential service you do for the next thirty years of ownership.

Ceiling Math Cedar Rapids Buyers Miss

The most common mistake we see on pole-building installs is buying auto lifts for home garage use without measuring ceiling clear height correctly. The 12-foot side-wall number on a 30×40 pole building refers to the wall, not the interior overhead. Trusses drop that number by 18 to 30 inches depending on the truss profile and the span, and once you hang lights the working overhead can be closer to nine and a half feet. A two-post rated for a passenger vehicle at ten thousand pounds needs about eleven feet of clear height minimum, and taller if you plan to walk a truck up on it.
