We’ve walked plenty of people through this, including a restorer who was framing up a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls and wanted to store one car up top and work underneath a second. That’s a good instinct, because sequencing the decision — budget first, then use case, then configuration — saves you from buying the wrong lift and then rebuilding around it. Step One: Set the Budget Before You Set the Configuration

Every decision tree for auto lifts for home garage projects has to start with money, because budget eliminates entire categories before you even talk about lift type. A basic two-post lift for light-duty alignment and suspension work sits at one price point, a four-post storage lift with a rolling jack sits at another, and a heavier-duty two-post rated for restoration work with full-frame trucks or classic cars sits higher still. Restoration shop owners often assume the fancier lift — a scissor or an inground unit — is the goal, but for most home-garage-scale restoration work, that’s spending money for no real benefit.

We tell people to nail down three numbers before calling us: total project budget, monthly budget if financing, and how much of that is lift versus concrete, electrical, and door clearance. This is also the point where financing options — no-interest promotional terms are common in our industry — can change the math enough to bump you up a tier, which matters a lot if alignment work is the primary use case and you need a lift built for that kind of side-loading.

Step Two: Match the Lift to Alignment and Restoration Work Specifically

Alignment work puts different stress on a lift than general maintenance does. You’re turning wheels, pushing and pulling on suspension components, and sometimes running the vehicle with the engine on for extended periods. That means auto lifts for home garage alignment use need to be rated appropriately and, ideally, have a turning-radius-friendly deck or open-center design so you’re not fighting the lift’s own arms to get a caster reading.

For restoration work specifically, you’re also dealing with vehicles that don’t have factory-standard lift points — older frames, modified chassis, project cars missing panels. A two-post lift with adjustable arms and a wide range of pad heights handles this better than a fixed-pad lift. Step Three: Decide Storage-Only vs. Storage-Plus-Work

This is the fork in the tree that determines everything downstream. If you want to store one car up top and work underneath a second — which is exactly the setup a lot of northeast Iowa pole building owners describe to us — you need a four-post lift, not a two-post. Two-post lifts are built for lifting and working, not for parking a vehicle overhead for weeks at a time while you work below it.

A four-post configuration with a rolling jack bridges this gap well: park a car on the deck for storage, then roll the jack under a second vehicle on the shop floor for actual service work. If your restoration projects mostly involve engine-out work, full disassembly, and long-term builds, this storage-plus-work configuration is almost always the right answer, even though a two-post lift is the cheaper sticker price at first glance.

Step Four: Confirm Ceiling Height and Sidewall Clearance

A 12-foot sidewall sounds like plenty of room until you do the math on lift height, vehicle height, and the clearance you need to actually open a door or access an engine bay at full extension. Most auto lifts for home garage installations need at least 12 feet of clearance for a two-post lift raised to full height with an average sedan or truck on it, and four-post storage configurations can eat into that further depending on the vehicle stacked on top.

We always recommend a site visit or at minimum a detailed measurement exchange before ordering, because we can lay a lift out on paper or in person so you can see exactly how it fits your bay before you buy anything. Restoration shop bays often have unique obstacles — low-hanging trusses, dust collection ductwork, overhead lighting — that don’t show up on a basic dimension sheet but absolutely affect which lift model will actually work in your specific building.

Step Five: Plan Concrete and Anchoring Before the Lift Arrives

Concrete thickness and cure time are the most commonly skipped step in restoration shop buildouts. Most two-post and four-post lifts need a minimum slab thickness with proper rebar or mesh reinforcement, and the anchors need concrete that’s fully cured — not just poured — before installation. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for the lift bay, plan the lift purchase timeline around the cure schedule, not the other way around.

This is a case where sequencing really does matter: order the lift and confirm the model before the final concrete pour, because pad thickness requirements vary by lift weight rating, and it’s far cheaper to adjust a slab spec on paper than to core-drill and re-anchor after the fact. Step Six: Choose Your Configuration and Get It Installed Right

By the time you’ve worked through budget, use case, storage needs, and clearance, the actual lift model tends to pick itself. What’s left is making sure it’s installed correctly — leveled, anchored, and calibrated so the locks and safety mechanisms function the way they’re supposed to. A poorly installed lift is a liability regardless of how good the model is on paper.

Getting this right the first time avoids the common problem of a lift technically fitting the space but not fitting the actual vehicles being worked on.

Step Seven: Think Ahead to Resale and Shop Growth

Home garage and restoration shop lifts often outlive the original building plan — you expand, add a second bay, or eventually sell the shop with the lift included. Choosing a well-known, serviceable brand matters here, because parts availability and resale value both depend on it. A lift from a widely supported line will hold value and be easier to service years down the road than an off-brand unit nobody stocks parts for.

If there’s any chance you’ll add a second lift down the road, it’s worth planning electrical and floor space for it now, even if you’re only installing one unit today. Restoration shops especially tend to grow into needing two lifts faster than owners expect, and running conduit or leaving panel capacity during the original buildout is far cheaper than retrofitting later.
