Restoration changes the use pattern entirely

A restoration project puts a vehicle on a lift for months, not hours. The lift becomes a rolling workstation, and the priorities shift accordingly. Where a maintenance shop needs quick raise-and-lower speed, a restoration shop needs stable holding at working height for weeks on end. Where a maintenance shop needs full access to the underside, a restoration shop needs full access to the sides and top of the frame while the body is off. That single difference in use pattern reshapes the entire spec for auto lifts for home garage in a restoration context.

Our Ames buyer had been working on jack stands for three years, and his back and his patience were both wearing out. The trigger was his realization that he was spending as much time positioning and repositioning the car as he was working on it. A lift removes that friction entirely: park the car once, raise it to a working height, and leave it there. The trade-off is that the lift occupies its bay for the duration of the project, which is a much bigger commitment for a hobbyist restorer than it is for a shop rotating vehicles daily. For a restorer with the space and budget for both, that is genuinely the ideal setup and we install it more often than people expect. Configuration: symmetric or asymmetric arms

On the two-post branch of the tree, the next choice is symmetric or asymmetric arms. Symmetric arms are the same length front and back, and they center the vehicle between the columns, which gives even door clearance and is the traditional truck-shop configuration. Asymmetric arms are shorter in the rear, which lets the vehicle sit slightly behind center between the columns and opens up door clearance for the driver and passenger to exit an early car with wide doors already lifted off the ground.

For a restoration project, especially on a car with early doors that swing wide, asymmetric is almost always the right answer. Our Ames buyer’s muscle car had doors that opened past ninety degrees for the seat wedge, and centering the car symmetrically would have left the front columns exactly where the driver door swept. Asymmetric moved the car twelve inches back, cleared the door swing, and gave him full walk-around access with the car in the air. Height: full lift, or working height

The third branch is height. A two-post can lift a car to any of a series of locked positions, typically every three inches or so up the column. Cable and cylinder longevity in a long-hold environment

Cables under continuous tension, hydraulic seals sitting under continuous pressure, and safety locks bearing load for the duration all age differently than they do in a rotating-vehicle shop. The good news is that the aging is manageable, and it does not shorten the total life of the lift meaningfully as long as the owner uses the safety locks correctly.

The rule we give restoration customers is this: never leave the vehicle held by hydraulic pressure alone for more than a few hours. Always lower the lift onto its mechanical safety locks and confirm both sides are engaged before walking away for the day. Hydraulic seals leak eventually, and a car resting on its locks is a car that will still be at working height in the morning regardless of what the seals do overnight. Financing: how the payment schedule can shape the decision

The final branch is financing, and for a hobbyist restorer this often decides which tier the buyer ends up in. He is a year into the project now, and the car has been at working height for most of that year with occasional trips to full lift for driveline work. Nothing on the lift has aged unexpectedly, and he sends us photos every few months.
