Model number differences you actually notice

Every major brand we sell — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — produces both two-post and four-post lifts in the 9,000 to 14,000 lb capacity range that suits small fleets. Rotary’s SPO series and Challenger’s CL series are the workhorses in the two-post category. Rotary’s R and RH series and BendPak’s HD series are the standard four-post options. Model numbers within a series usually vary by column height, arm style, and cable routing (overhead vs floor plate). The specs that actually change between models are max lift height (about 6 feet for four-post, up to about 7 feet for two-post), footprint (four-post is longer, two-post is wider), and capacity per contact point.

For a small fleet doing exhaust and driveline work, the honest model spec that matters most is max working height and clearance under the vehicle for tool swing. A two-post at 6 feet 6 inches of lift height gives you clear standing room under a mid-size pickup. A four-post at 5 feet 10 inches of lift height puts you closer to the vehicle but has a stable platform overhead. Some technicians prefer one, some the other, and there’s no wrong answer — only wrong pairing with your specific workflow. Auto lifts for home garage fleet work usually go two-post for service and four-post for storage between service.

Exhaust work: which architecture wins

Exhaust work involves cutting, welding, and hanging heavy pipe assemblies. On a two-post, the wheels are hanging free and the entire underside is open. You can slide a floor jack under any point to support a muffler while you weld. You can walk around all four sides of the vehicle without stepping over runways. The clearance is excellent and the setup is fast. This is where two-post shines. Small-fleet operators doing regular exhaust replacements almost always prefer a two-post for exactly these reasons.

On a four-post, the runways are in the way for exhaust work. You can’t slide a full-length pipe assembly out from under the vehicle without pulling it around a runway. Bridge jacks help — they lift the wheels off the runways so you can pull them — but they’re an extra step and an extra piece of equipment. If exhaust is a major part of your fleet workload, four-post is workable but not optimal. If exhaust is occasional, four-post is fine. If exhaust is daily, you want a two-post. Driveline work: torque tubes, U-joints, and yokes

Driveline work involves pulling driveshafts, servicing U-joints, and sometimes replacing transmission or axle yokes. The wheels need to be free to rotate during service because you’re pulling the driveshaft while it’s disconnected. On a two-post, the wheels hang free naturally and you can rotate them by hand or with a driveshaft. Access to the driveshaft is unobstructed. Pulling a two-piece truck driveshaft is straightforward and the parts don’t hit anything on the way down.

On a four-post, the wheels sit on the runways which prevents them from rotating. You need a bridge jack to lift the axle off the runway so the wheels can turn during driveshaft service. That’s an extra step. The driveshaft itself has to be pulled out from between the runways which is fine on most vehicles but tight on long-wheelbase pickups. Four-post works for driveline but with more steps. Two-post is faster. For small-fleet operators doing regular driveline maintenance across a mixed fleet of trucks and vans, two-post is our default recommendation for the primary service bay.

Capacity and safety margin considerations

Small-fleet operations sometimes run heavier vehicles than owners realize. A 3/4-ton pickup fully loaded with a service body and tools can push 8,500 lb. A cargo van with racks and stock can push 9,000 lb. If you spec a 9,000 lb lift because the manufacturer curb weight is 6,200 lb, you’re running at capacity on every loaded lift cycle. That’s a bad long-term plan for cable and cylinder life. Our default recommendation for small-fleet home-garage service is 10,000 lb capacity minimum, and 12,000 lb if the fleet includes any van or larger truck.

The price difference between 9,000 and 10,000 lb is minimal — usually a few hundred dollars — and the price difference between 10,000 and 12,000 lb is a bit larger but still reasonable. Buying up in capacity is the single easiest way to extend the service life of the lift and reduce ongoing maintenance frequency. Auto lifts for home garage fleet operations should be sized to the heaviest vehicle you’ll ever lift, not to the average. That’s the rule. Small-fleet operators who ignore this end up replacing cables at year 5 instead of year 10, and the savings from downsizing evaporate in the first cable swap.

Bay layout and workflow integration

Two-post lifts are wider than they are deep. A typical footprint is 12 feet column-to-column by 6 feet deep once arms are folded. Four-post lifts are the opposite — longer than they are wide. A typical footprint is 9 feet wide by 20 feet long including approach ramps. That footprint difference drives bay layout more than anything else. A wide, shallow bay wants a two-post. A narrow, deep bay wants a four-post. Most home garages are either three-stall attached (wide and shallow) or pole barn (both wide and deep), so either can work.

For a small fleet running multiple vehicles through service, a two-post plus a four-post storage setup lets you park one vehicle on the storage lift overhead while working on another on the service lift below. That doubles bay density in the same building. Some Ankeny-area fleet operators have this exact setup and it’s the most efficient use of a 40×40 shop we’ve seen. If bay density matters to you and you have the ceiling for it, the combined two-post plus four-post arrangement is worth serious consideration. It’s also more expensive than a single lift, obviously, but the workflow gains often justify the spend.

Install and long-term cost differences

Two-post install labor runs longer than four-post install because of anchoring and cable routing. A four-post lift is essentially free-standing once assembled and calibrated, while a two-post has to be anchored to the slab with eight to sixteen wedge anchors torqued to spec. Total install time is about a day for two-post, half a day for four-post. Labor cost reflects that difference. Freight is similar for both.

Long-term maintenance cost is slightly higher on a two-post because there are more wear items — equalizer cables, arm restraints, cylinder seals in a smaller-diameter cylinder. Four-post lifts have fewer wear items but larger, more expensive replacement parts when they do wear. Over 15 years, the two lifts probably cost about the same in total maintenance spend. The bigger differentiator is duty cycle: a two-post used daily for service work sees more cycles than a four-post used for storage plus occasional service. Higher cycles equal more wear regardless of architecture. Match the tool to the workload and expect maintenance costs to scale with use.

Our small-fleet default recommendation

For a small fleet in the Ankeny area doing exhaust, driveline, and general service work with occasional storage needs, our default recommendation is a 10,000 lb versatile-arm two-post as the primary service lift, backed by a 9,000 lb four-post storage lift if bay space allows. The two-post handles daily service across the mixed fleet including the heaviest trucks. The four-post handles overnight or between-service storage plus any vehicle awaiting parts.
