A Waterloo-area vehicle collector who keeps a rotating stable of six to eight cars — a mix of muscle-era American iron, one European sports car, and a couple of daily drivers — asked us to help him set up a home shop lift last spring. His use case was specific: swap CV axles on the daily drivers, do routine service across the whole fleet, and store a spare car overhead in the winter. This piece is his first-year ownership story with the lift we installed, told honestly, including the choices that turned out right and the small ones we’d tweak with 20/20 hindsight. The vehicle list that drove the decision

The collector’s list was: a 1969 Chevelle SS with drum brakes and a solid rear axle, a 1972 GMC C10 pickup, a Porsche Cayman as the weekend driver, a Subaru Outback as the daily driver, a Honda Odyssey for the family, and a beater Ranger for hauling parts. Six vehicles, roughly a 3,000-pound spread from lightest to heaviest, three different wheelbase categories, and a mix of pinch-weld and full-frame lifting-point geometry. Any lift we spec’d had to handle all six without compromises.

That vehicle mix rules out four-post lifts as the primary tool because CV axle work on the Subaru Outback and general service on the Cayman both want the wheels-free access that only a two-post gives. But it also ruled out asymmetric arms as a default because the Chevelle and the C10 need symmetric arm geometry — American muscle era vehicles have their center of mass roughly centered between the axles. This is one of the classic tension points on auto lifts for home garage builds for collectors: your fleet includes vehicles that want asymmetric arms and vehicles that want symmetric arms.

The symmetric vs asymmetric decision

The clean answer for a mixed collector fleet is a lift with adjustable-swing symmetric arms — arms that can rotate to slightly asymmetric positions for individual vehicles as needed. Both Rotary and Challenger make lifts in this configuration. For this Waterloo build, we spec’d a Rotary SPOA10 with symmetric arms that had the extra swing range to handle the Porsche’s door clearance when needed. That gave the collector one lift that could do everything, with a small workflow adjustment for the sports car.

Was that the right call? In hindsight, yes. The collector reports that he adjusts arm swing on the Cayman every time and never touches it on the American iron. The one downside: on the Odyssey minivan, the arm swing is a compromise between the two extremes and takes an extra 30 seconds to position. If we spec’d this again for auto lifts for home garage builds with a very heavy sports-car workload, we might push harder for asymmetric arms. But for a mixed fleet with more American iron than European coupe, symmetric with wide swing was the right pick.

Install day: what actually happened

Install day in Waterloo was a Tuesday in April. Our crew arrived at 8 a.m., unloaded the lift, and had the columns anchored by 10:30. The slab was a modern pole-barn pour, 5 inches of 4,000-PSI with rebar, and the test-hole inspection had confirmed that during the pre-install site walk. Anchor drill-out went clean, no surprises. Hydraulic lines and the electrical connection took another two hours. By 1 p.m. we were cycling the lift empty for the 20-cycle verification.

The one hiccup was a small one: the 220V outlet the electrician had run for the lift was on the north wall, and the lift’s power unit sat on the south column. We ran a slightly longer power cord than we’d have preferred — not unsafe, but visually not our first choice. If we did this install over, we’d tell the electrician to run the outlet on the south wall specifically. For any future auto lifts for home garage installs, we now confirm outlet location relative to power-unit location before the electrician does the work, not after.

The first CV axle job

The collector’s first real job on the lift was a passenger-side CV axle on the Subaru Outback in June. He reports that the whole job — jack the front, remove wheel, pull the axle nut, pop the strut top, disconnect the tie rod end, pull the axle — took him about 90 minutes on the lift compared to about three and a half hours the previous time he did the same job on the driveway with jack stands. The lift paid for itself in labor time on that single job in a way that felt real.

What surprised him was how much the mechanical safety locks changed his working posture. On jack stands, you’re always half-listening for a stand-slip creak. On the lift’s mechanical locks, you set them at working height and forget them. He described the mental relief as bigger than expected. That’s a real benefit of auto lifts for home garage ownership that doesn’t show up on any spec sheet — you’re not worried about the vehicle falling on you, so you can concentrate on the work. Every collector we’ve sold a lift to reports the same thing.

Storing a car overhead: the honest verdict

The winter storage plan was to put the Chevelle on the lift and the C10 underneath from November through March. That worked, but with caveats. The two-post lift’s arm-lift geometry means the car sits on its pinch-welds at storage height, which is fine for a few days but not ideal for four months straight. Long-term storage puts localized weight on the pinch-weld contact points, and if the pads aren’t rotated occasionally, you can get slight impressions in the weld seams.

His workaround: he stored the Chevelle on the lift for December through February and dropped it back to jack stands for March. That’s more work than the pure lift-storage plan he’d envisioned. In hindsight, we’d recommend a four-post storage lift as a second lift for serious collectors who want to stack cars for months at a time. A four-post supports the vehicle on its tires, which is how it’s designed to sit, and imposes no localized pinch-weld load. For auto lifts for home garage collectors, one lift is a compromise; two lifts is the real answer if the shop and budget can accommodate.

Maintenance and the first-year service

At the one-year mark we returned for a scheduled first-year service. That’s a two-hour visit where we check hydraulic fluid level, inspect the safety-lock cables for stretch, verify the equalization cables are still in spec, and torque-check the anchor bolts. On the Rotary SPOA10 we found everything within factory spec except one anchor bolt that had backed off about a quarter turn — normal seating, not a failure. We snugged it back up and moved on.

Fluid stayed clean, no cable stretch, no leaks. That’s the pattern on a mid-tier lift in a home shop that isn’t beat on every day. Serviced properly, this lift should hit 25 years of reliable service with a fluid change at year 10 and periodic cable inspections. Entry-tier lifts we’ve serviced sometimes need cable adjustment as early as year 3. That’s the durability delta that justifies the mid-tier premium for auto lifts for home garage buyers who want to stop thinking about the lift after they install it.

What we would tell any collector starting over

If a collector called us today with the same vehicle list, we’d give the same primary recommendation: 10,000-pound two-post with wide-swing symmetric arms. We’d add one thing to the initial spec that we didn’t include on the Waterloo build — a rolling hydraulic jack tray that mounts to the lift’s arms. That accessory is $600 to $900 and turns the two-post into a much more capable rear-axle-work station for the Chevelle solid-axle rear and any pickup differential service.

Second, we’d have the site-walk conversation about a possible future four-post storage lift on the opposite side of the pole barn. Serious collectors typically end up with two lifts within five years of buying the first one.
