A Quad Cities specialty shop working on European marques called us this spring for a site survey on auto lifts for home garage restoration work. The owner had been running his business out of a rented bay and was moving into his own building — a converted machine shop with a 20-year-old slab. He’d read enough forum posts about auto lifts for home garage installs to be dangerous, and he’d absorbed a few myths that were about to cost him. Myth: any concrete slab will hold a lift

The first myth is the most expensive one. Not every slab is lift-ready. The shop owner’s building had a 20-year-old slab that looked fine on the surface, but a core sample showed only 3.5 inches of concrete over compacted gravel — less than the 4-inch minimum most manufacturers specify for a 10,000-pound two-post. Even worse, the compressive strength tested at 2,400 PSI, below the 3,000 PSI standard requirement. Anchoring a lift in that slab would have been risky — the wedge anchors need solid concrete around them to hold under load. We recommended a slab overlay in the lift bay: cut out a 10×24 section, pour six inches of 4,000 PSI concrete, wait 28 days, then install. The overlay added about $2,000 and a month to the project, but it made the lift install safe. Myth: ceiling height doesn’t matter for low cars

The shop owner assumed that because he was mainly working on low European coupes, ceiling height wasn’t a concern. It is. Even a 45-inch-tall Porsche 911 on full-rise two-post columns wants 130+ inches of clearance from the slab to the top beam. If the top beam of the lift sits at 145 inches and the ceiling is at 108 inches, you can’t install the lift at all — the top beam won’t fit. The shop had a suspended ceiling at 106 inches. We had to spec a low-rise two-post variant with an overhead-cable design under 110 inches, which limited the maximum lifting height. Or he could pull the ceiling. He pulled the ceiling. Auto lifts for home garage restoration shops working on low cars still need standard full-rise clearance because full-rise gives you enough room to stand and work under the car, not just to lift a low chassis a foot off the ground.

Myth: you can add a lift later without planning wiring

Another myth we hear constantly: "I’ll figure out the electrical when the lift shows up." The shop owner’s building had a 60-amp sub-panel and two 220V circuits — a range circuit from the previous tenant and a compressor circuit. Neither was where the lift needed power. Running a new 30-amp 220V drop from the sub-panel to the lift column meant fishing wire through 40 feet of concrete-block wall, and the sub-panel was full. He needed a bigger sub-panel first ($1,200 with an electrician’s labor), then the new circuit ($600). If he’d planned the electrical before pulling the trigger on the lift, he could have coordinated the electrician’s visit with the install crew’s visit. Instead, the lift sat parked in his shop uninstalled for three weeks while he chased down electrical scheduling. Myth: aluminum-bodied cars need special lift pads

The shop owner works on Audi and Jaguar aluminum-frame cars regularly and asked whether he needed specialty urethane pads or aluminum-safe adapters. The honest answer is: not usually. Standard rubber lift pads from Rotary or Challenger have been used on aluminum-bodied cars for decades without issue. What you do need to be careful about is the exact pickup point on aluminum-frame cars — they have specific reinforced lift points, and lifting on the wrong spot can dent or crease the frame. That’s a placement issue, not a pad-material issue. Some restorers use urethane pads because they’re easier on paint under the pinch weld; that’s a preference, not a requirement. Myth: European cars need European lifts

The shop owner also asked whether he needed a lift built specifically for European cars. He didn’t. Pinch-weld pickup points, drive-on runway spacing, arm swing — all match European vehicles the same way they match American ones. The only exception is the Porsche and some Ferrari applications where the manufacturer specifies asymmetric lift geometry for door swing at full rise. That’s still a standard Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger CL10V3 configuration — no special import lift required. There are boutique European lift brands sold in the US market at a premium; they’re not measurably better than a domestically-built Rotary or Challenger for the money. What we actually check on a Quad Cities site survey

A proper site survey takes about an hour and covers the checklist we hand every customer: slab thickness (via core sample if needed), slab compressive strength, ceiling clearance (measured to the lowest overhead point, not the peak), electrical panel capacity and open slot availability, distance from panel to lift motor column, door swing and workflow, obstruction mapping (posts, drains, floor slopes), and vehicle mix. For the Quad Cities shop, the survey turned up the slab issue, the ceiling issue, and the electrical issue all in one visit. We quoted a full package including slab overlay, ceiling adjustment, electrical upgrade, and lift install, and the customer approved it two weeks later.
