For home garages the answer is almost always four-post. A four-post gives you three things a home owner actually wants: drive-on ease, overnight vehicle storage (park the summer car above the winter car), and a stable platform for basic maintenance. Two-post lifts are better for wheels-off work, but they require perfect concrete, a real anchor pattern, and more ceiling clearance. Most Iowa attached garages have 9 to 10 feet of ceiling, which is tight for a full-rise two-post but perfect for a 4-post storage lift. The ceiling and concrete reality check
A typical Iowa attached garage was poured with 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete and has a 9 to 10 foot ceiling. That is enough for most 9,000 lb four-post storage lifts. A pole-barn or shop-style detached garage often has taller ceilings (12 to 14 feet) but sometimes thinner concrete of unknown psi. Then the play is a two-post — specifically an asymmetric two-post with a low-ceiling design. The BendPak XPR-10AS and the Rotary SPOA10 come up most often in our home auto lifts for home garage installs. Both need 4.25 inches of 4,000 psi concrete and about 12 feet of ceiling for full rise.
