A two-post lift raises the vehicle by the frame or the pinch-welds, which means the tires and suspension hang free. That’s exactly what you want for a brake job or a CV axle swap, and exactly the opposite of what you want for alignment. Alignment measures the geometry of a suspension that is loaded — the vehicle needs to be sitting on its own weight, on flat runways, with the front wheels free to steer and the rear wheels free to shift. You cannot do a real alignment on a vehicle whose wheels are dangling.
We see hobbyists try to work around this with drive-on ramps and a two-post, and it does not produce alignment numbers you can trust. Camber changes as the suspension unloads, toe changes with steering-axis-inclination math the machine can’t compensate for, and you end up chasing readings you’ll re-do at a real shop. Four-post alignment lifts: what to look for
Not every four-post lift is alignment-capable. A storage four-post has flat runways and is designed to hold a car up in the air for parking. An alignment four-post has runways with front turnplate cutouts and rear slip-plate cutouts, plus the mechanical accuracy in level and runway parallelism to actually hold a set of alignment specs. The two lifts look similar from 10 feet away, but the internal components — leveling cables, cross-tube stiffness, runway machining — are meaningfully different.

Steel turnplates are the workhorse option and run in the mid-hundreds per pair. Precision aluminum with bearing-race construction runs higher and gives you smoother steering-axis measurements on lighter vehicles. Slip plates for the rear axle typically come with the alignment lift, but check the invoice. On some brands they’re an add-on. You also want a rolling jack for the runway if you’re doing any suspension component swaps between alignment readings — a jack that runs along the underside of the runways lets you unload the suspension for a control arm change and then set it back down for the re-measure. Budget for the jack up front. Adding one later is more expensive because you’re paying for freight on a single item.
What alignment machine goes with a home lift
Home alignment starts with the machine, and the machine is often more expensive than the lift itself. Both Rotary and Challenger alignment four-posts are dimensioned to standard machine footprints, so a Hunter head will work with either.
