Decision one: what is your total project budget?
The whole tree starts with total project budget, not just lift price. Total project includes the lift itself, freight, installation labor, any slab prep, electrical work, and accessories. Buyers who only budget the lift price and then get surprised by the other numbers end up either under-scoping or delaying. Better to know the whole picture up front.
For our Cedar Falls client, he had a project budget that put him comfortably in the mid-tier lift category with room for professional install and a rolling jack. That budget made the tree easy because it opened up the good mid-tier lifts without forcing tradeoffs. If your budget is tighter, the tree still works but you make some compromises: maybe a shorter accessory package, or a self-install if you have the skills. If your budget is bigger, you get into premium lifts with heavier steel and better warranties. There is no wrong number here. The number just drives everything downstream. Decision two: what does your bay actually look like?
Bay size and ceiling height narrow the options fast. Standard overhead two-post lifts want at least 12 feet of clearance. Low-ceiling variants can go down to about 10 feet 6. Floor-plate lifts route the equalization line through a floor channel instead of overhead and can fit under lower ceilings. Four-post storage lifts sit low and are more forgiving of tight bays.
His Cedar Falls bay was 14 feet wide, 24 feet deep, and 12 feet 6 to the truss bottom. That is a well-proportioned bay and it accepted any two-post configuration without compromise. If your bay is narrower than 12 feet wide, arm-swing clearance gets tight and asymmetric might edge out symmetric. If your ceiling is under 12 feet, low-ceiling or floor-plate variants come to the front. If your bay is short (under 22 feet deep), you may not have room to open a hood or trunk while the vehicle is on the lift. Every constraint changes the shortlist. Take honest measurements and share them all before we build a spec.
Decision three: what vehicles will you actually work on?
The vehicle mix determines capacity, arm reach, and pad choice. His race car was light, his tow vehicle was a full-size pickup around 6,500 pounds, and his family driver was a mid-size SUV. That mix pointed to a 10,000-pound capacity lift with three-stage arms and standard pads. A lower-capacity lift would have been marginal on the pickup. Higher capacity would have been unnecessary and slightly heavier to operate.
If your mix includes anything heavier (a dually, a lifted diesel, a work truck), step up to 12,000 pounds or higher. If your mix is all sedans and small cars, 9,000 pounds is plenty and slightly cheaper. Do not oversize dramatically. A 15,000-pound lift for sedan work is overkill and the swing arms are heavier than they need to be, making everyday use a little annoying. Match capacity to your fleet plus a 20 percent margin. That is the sweet spot. Be honest about your fleet and be honest about future purchases you might make.
Decision four: symmetric or asymmetric arms?
With bay width and vehicle mix known, arm geometry falls out of the decision tree naturally. Wide bay plus mixed vehicles including trucks equals symmetric. Narrow bay plus mostly cars equals asymmetric. Wide bay plus mostly cars is a coin flip and comes down to preference; we default symmetric because it is more forgiving of load imbalance. Narrow bay plus trucks is the hardest case; you sometimes need to bump up to a wider column spacing or accept some door-swing tightness with asymmetric.
For his Cedar Falls build we settled on symmetric because the pickup was tail-heavy with the tow package and the race car had some odd weight distribution from a stripped interior and a rear-mounted battery. Symmetric handled all three cars with predictable arm loading. Asymmetric would have worked for the family SUV and the race car but marginal on the pickup. When in doubt, the answer is symmetric on trucks and asymmetric on tight bays. Everything else is a preference call between two acceptable configurations.
Decision five: install prep and site survey
Before we finalize the lift model, we do a site survey. Slab thickness, slab age, control joint location, existing electrical, garage door track height, and any obstructions get logged. For his shop we found a solid 5-inch pour, one control joint we needed to avoid, existing 220V within twenty feet of the column location, and clear door tracks. That let us commit to the lift model without any nasty surprises on install day.
If the site survey turns up problems, they get addressed before install. A questionable slab means core samples and possibly a slab repair or pad pour. Missing 220V means an electrician gets scheduled before we arrive. Low door tracks means a track modification or a lift model change. None of these are dealbreakers. All of them are cheaper to catch in the survey than on install day. Never accept a lift quote from an installer who did not walk your site or at least review detailed photos. The survey is where problems get found.
Decision six: accessories and future flexibility
With the lift decided, accessories are next. For tire and wheel work specifically, a rolling jack is worth its weight in gold. It lets you support one axle while removing wheels from another, which is essential for rotation, alignment, or wheel bearing work. Frame-cradle pads matter if you work on modern cars with plastic underbody trim. Drip trays keep the slab clean if you do frequent fluid work.
For his Cedar Falls setup, we quoted the lift with a matched rolling jack, a set of tall frame-cradle pads for the race car, and a couple of drip trays for the fluid work. Total accessory package was a small fraction of the lift cost and made the whole tool a lot more useful. Do not skip accessories to save money. They are the difference between a lift that gets used and a lift that sits idle because it is annoying to work with. Buy the useful stuff up front.
