What Overhead vs Baseplate Actually Means for Your Ceiling

An overhead two-post lift runs its cross-brace across the top, above the vehicle, tying the two posts together up high. That design is rock steady and tends to cost less, but it needs real ceiling clearance — usually 12 feet or more depending on the model and how tall your vehicle sits once it’s raised. A baseplate lift ties the posts together at floor level instead, with a steel plate running between them across the floor. No overhead beam means you can work in a shop with a lower ceiling, and some guys prefer the unobstructed view straight up when they’re working under a raised vehicle pulling a CV axle or dropping a subframe.

The tradeoff is that baseplate lifts put a steel runner across your floor between the posts, which can be a mild tripping hazard and occasionally gets in the way of rolling a floor jack or transmission jack underneath. Concrete Floors and Anchoring: The Part Nobody Asks About Until It’s a Problem

If storage-while-raised is part of your plan from day one, say so when you’re shopping, because it affects which model and which configuration actually works in your space. It’s a much easier problem to solve before you buy than after the posts are anchored to the floor.
