An overlanding and off-road builder here in Ames called us last fall while he was still framing his new shop. He was 43 years old, had two roof-tent rigs he maintains himself, and wanted to spec his lift and layout in the same conversation as his slab and his 220V feed. Most homeowners buy a lift after the garage is built, then discover the door swing is wrong or the ceiling is short. He wanted to do it in the opposite order: pick the lift first, then finish the building around it. That is the smart order. Here is how we walked him through a full build-out sequence for auto lifts for home garage duty.

Step 1: Pick the Lift Class Before You Pick the Slab
The single most useful thing an owner-builder can do is decide lift class before the concrete truck is scheduled. Lift class dictates the slab thickness, the reinforcement spec, and the anchor pattern. A 9,000 lb two-post is happy on four inches of 3,000 PSI. A 12,000 lb two-post prefers six inches. A 4-post storage lift with a 7,000 lb rating is closer to the two-post spec. Trying to reverse-engineer these after the slab is poured is possible but expensive.
The Ames overlander picked a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post as his primary lift and added a 9,000 lb 4-post for storage in a separate bay. That let his concrete crew pour four inches at 3,500 PSI across the whole building, with a slightly thicker anchor zone under the two-post columns. This is the kind of alignment that saves real money once you are looking at anchor pull tests six months later.
Step 2: Ceiling Height Locks in Lift Height
The overlander had flexibility on truss height because he was still framing. We walked him through the lift-height math: a tall two-post asks for 12 feet of clear underneath the crossbar; his overhead trusses at 14 feet gave him room to spare. He also wanted to be able to lift a truck with a roof tent and rack, so we added a working buffer for the top of his tallest expected rig.
Ceiling height matters more than most buyers realize because it dictates whether you can raise a full-size SUV all the way for a full oil change or only halfway. Half-height is doable; full-height is much more comfortable. If you are already framing a new building for auto lifts for home garage duty, spend the money for one extra course of wall panel. The added clear height pays back every service you do for the next 30 years.
Step 3: Bay Width and Column Spacing
A two-post lift needs about 14 feet of bay width to sit comfortably. The overlander laid out two 15-foot bays plus a workshop bay, which gave him room for both lifts and a proper tool wall. Column-to-column inside spacing on his two-post is about 112 inches, and the bay accommodates that with a foot of walking space on each side.
Bay depth is the other axis. On a 4-post, you want at least 22 feet of clear front-to-back to accommodate the runways and both approach ramps. His bay depth was 28 feet, which lets him park a truck with a bumper accessory and still close the bay door. Do not shortchange depth. A cramped 4-post is a bay you resent using.
Auto Lifts for Home Garage Need a Real 220V Feed
Every 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post lift we sell needs 220V single phase, typically on a 30-amp breaker. A 4-post storage lift is similar. Your electrician should run 10-gauge or heavier wire from the panel to a properly mounted junction box within reach of the power unit. Do not rely on an extension cord. Do not share the breaker with any other load.
The overlander ran two separate 220V circuits, one for each lift, plus a 220V circuit for a future air compressor and dryer stack. That level of planning is the reason his build did not have any electrical rework six months later. It is one of the top three reasons a home install goes long.
Step 4: Lighting and Ventilation Around the Lift
Overhead lighting is where every home shop gets short. Under a lifted vehicle, the runways and posts block the ambient light and you end up working by flashlight. Plan for LED panel lights on both sides of the lift, ideally on switched circuits so you can kill the glare when you want to see reflections on paint. We ran that spec past the overlander during framing so his electrician could rough it in.
Ventilation is the other quiet miss. Oil changes and fluid service on auto lifts for home garage builds produce fumes, especially if you are draining old gear oil or a hot ATF. A basic through-wall exhaust fan and a fresh-air intake are cheap during framing and expensive after paint. Do it now.
Step 5: Install Sequence and Timing
The install sequence we ran with the overlander was: slab cure minimum 28 days, then framing complete, then electrical rough-in and inspection, then lift delivery, then install. We show up on install day with the crew and the lift stays in the truck until anchor pull tests pass on his slab. If a test fails, we do not put a lift on that concrete.
His slab passed with plenty of margin. Both lifts went in on a single Saturday with two of our techs. He was cycling the two-post for the first time before dinner. That timeline is only possible when the buyer has done the pre-work — slab, ceiling, wiring, lighting — before we roll in. It is much slower and messier when we arrive to find missing power or short ceilings.
Step 6: The First Oil Change Sets the Habit
The overlander’s first job on the new lift was a full fluid service on his primary overland rig: engine oil, differential, transfer case, and transmission. On a properly installed two-post at working height, that whole sequence runs in a couple hours. He put photos on his build blog with our shop hat visible in the background, which we appreciated but did not ask for.
The point is that the first job on a new lift sets the habit. Do a real service, in the correct sequence, using proper drain pans and a torque wrench, and the lift becomes the tool you reach for. Skip the first proper service and it becomes the storage rack you sometimes stand under. Get the routine right on day one.
