What changes at home is who is watching, and the answer is usually nobody. That is the exact reason home safety needs to be more careful, not less. Cylinder Seals: The Failure Nobody Warns You About

A piston seal bypassing internally shows up as the lift settling slowly on hydraulics with no load, or drifting up when it should stay put. Either symptom is a call to us, not a reason to ignore it and keep working. Rebuild kits are inexpensive and the labor is a couple of hours if you know what you are doing, or a service call if you do not. Daily Pre-Use Inspection at Home
Fleet shops run a written pre-use inspection on every lift, every shift. That is overkill at home. What is not overkill is a 60-second walk-around before every use. Check that both cables show even tension by lightly pressing on each. Verify no fluid pooled on the floor under the cylinders or pump. Confirm both locking bars slide freely by cycling the release cable once. Look at the arm restraint gears and make sure they are engaging. Sixty seconds. If any of that is off, you found the problem before you lifted a vehicle, and that is the whole point. Locks, Safeties, and What They Actually Do
Mechanical safety locks are the number one reason a lift is safe. Hydraulics can leak, hoses can burst, valves can stick. Every certified two-post lift has locks that engage automatically as the carriage rises and release only when you actively press a lever or pull a cable. Never work under a load that is not sitting on locks. Ever. Fluid Service Without Rushing

Set the lift high enough that you are standing, not stooping. Set drip trays before you crack any drain plug. Torque the drain plug and filter housing to spec, not to feel. Log every service in a garage notebook with mileage and date. If a fleet manager can spend two minutes writing it down at work, a home mechanic can spend two minutes doing the same at home. When to Rebuild vs. Replace the Cylinder
A cylinder that is weeping externally at the rod wiper is a rebuild candidate. A cylinder with internal bypass, scored bore, or bent rod is a replace candidate. Our rule of thumb: if the seal is failing and the bore is clean, rebuild with an OEM seal kit. If the rod has any visible pitting or scoring on the polished surface, replace the cylinder complete. Trying to reseal a scored cylinder is a false economy because the new seal will fail against the same rough surface inside of a year.
