The Ames Garage: Real Numbers Before Any Purchase
His detached garage measured 24 feet wide by 30 feet deep with sidewalls of 10 feet 8 inches to the underside of the ceiling drywall. His overhead door was 9 feet wide by 8 feet tall with a residential torsion spring and a standard-radius track. Slab was five inches nominal, poured in 2018, unknown mix but visibly clean with no cracks in the drop zone. He wanted to work on wheel bearings and brakes on his family fleet, all sedans and one crossover. Nothing exotic. Just honest home service work. Every one of those numbers matters when specifying auto lifts for home garage installs, and getting them right on paper before ordering is the difference between a clean install and a frustrating one.
Rise Height, Overall Height, and Why They Aren’t the Same
Rise height is how far the carriage travels from the floor to fully raised. Overall height is how tall the lift structure is when the carriage is at the top. On a two-post overhead the overall height is usually the top of the crossbar, which sits above the carriage even when raised. That crossbar is what you have to clear with your ceiling. A common home two-post has an overall height of 140 to 150 inches. His 10-foot 8-inch ceiling gave him 128 inches, meaning a traditional overhead two-post did not fit. Floorplate style, where the equalizer bar runs across the floor between the columns instead of overhead, kept the overall height down and fit his ceiling with clearance.
Auto Lifts For Home Garage: The Ceiling Math That Actually Matters
Take your ceiling height in inches. Subtract the lift’s overall height in inches. If the result is positive, the lift fits. If it is negative, it does not. That is the whole calculation. Where buyers trip themselves up is measuring only at the peak of a truss and missing the low point where the truss meets the wall, or measuring to the top of the ceiling and forgetting to subtract for the door track hardware. Measure at the actual drop zone, at the lowest overhead feature, in inches, and then compare to the published overall height on the spec sheet. Never assume a rise height number is the same as an overall height number. That confusion is the single most common auto lifts for home garage ordering error we see.
Door Swing, Torsion Springs, and Header Height
Overhead residential doors ride on tracks that curve from vertical at the doorway to horizontal along the ceiling. Above the door opening sits the torsion spring bar and a header plate. The header steals about 12 to 18 inches of ceiling clearance in a strip that runs the full door width. That strip is exactly where the front lift arms will swing if the lift columns are positioned close to the door opening. The fix is to push the column layout back into the bay by about 24 inches, giving the front arms room to swing without hitting the door hardware. Wheel Bearing Service at Full Rise
Wheel bearing service is a wheels-off, hub-exposed job that benefits from a two-post lift at full rise. At full rise on a mid-tier two-post you are looking at around 72 to 74 inches of pad height, which puts a sedan’s wheel hub at roughly chest to shoulder level. That is the position where you can work a bearing press or hub puller without stooping. He was doing rear bearings on an older crossover and front hubs on a sedan, and the geometry lined up cleanly on his configuration. Do not try to do bearing work on a scissor lift at mid-rise. The height is wrong for the tooling and you end up back on your knees.
Column Width, Runway Length, and Arm Reach
Drive-through width between the columns on a home two-post is usually somewhere around 100 to 110 inches. Full-size trucks fit comfortably. Vintage cars with wide fenders fit. What matters more for arm reach is the three-stage front arm collapsed and extended length. Collapsed length matters for short-wheelbase vehicles like early sedans and roadsters. Extended length matters for long-wheelbase pickups and vans. Get both numbers off the spec sheet before ordering and compare them to your actual vehicles’ wheelbase and pickup-point positions. Bolting to Concrete: PSI, Depth, and Anchor Spec
Concrete anchor spec on most home two-post lifts is a three-quarter-inch wedge anchor, five and a half inch embedment, into concrete rated 3,000 PSI minimum and four inches minimum thickness. His slab was five inches at 4,000 PSI, well within spec. Anchor holes drilled with a rotary hammer at three-quarter-inch bit, blown clean with compressed air, anchors driven and torqued to 110 foot-pounds. Every lift comes with an anchor kit sized to its published spec; do not substitute hardware store anchors for the kit contents unless the manufacturer specifically approves it. Getting the anchor spec right is the last real technical decision on any auto lifts for home garage build, and it is what keeps the whole install standing.
