What actually shows up on the freight truck
A two-post lift arrives as two columns strapped upright to a pallet, an arms and hardware pallet, and a boxed power unit. Total shipping weight lands in the 1,700 to 2,100 lb range. A four-post lands heavier, usually 2,000 to 2,600 lb, and the runways ship long, which changes what truck the carrier sends. We remind every home-garage buyer to expect a 53-foot dry van with a driver who will not touch the freight, no liftgate on most quotes, and no residential dock. The bill of lading will list two or three pieces, and the driver will want a signature that everything is there and undamaged before the truck leaves. That last part matters more than most people realize, and we walk through it on the phone before the truck rolls.
Unloading without a dock
Rural Iowa shops rarely have a loading dock, so the two paths are a rental forklift or a rollback tow truck. A 6,000 lb forklift with 60 inch forks lifts a two-post column pallet easily and carries the arms box on the second trip. A rollback works too: the driver winches the pallet up the deck, drives to the shop, and slides everything off at ground level. Concrete and ceiling checks before delivery day

If a pole barn has a stamped four-inch pour and no visible cracks, a two-post anchors fine. If the pour is a mystery, we core a plug and check. Ceiling height is the other pre-delivery item: measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Two-post versus four-post for metal work
For metal work specifically, the two-post is the answer nine times out of ten. Frame rail welding, floor pan replacement, and rocker panel work all need arms out of the way, and a four-post runway blocks the underside of the sills. We had one customer try to do floor pans on a four-post and gave up after one afternoon. The exception is body work where the car sits at a fixed height for weeks — quarter panel replacement, roof skin work — and the four-post becomes a rolling workbench. If a shop does both, we quote two lifts and stagger the purchase over two years.
Anchor bolts, calibration, and first lift
Install day is a two-person, six-hour job on a clean pad. Anchors get set with a rotary hammer and a torque wrench, not a impact gun and hope. Columns get plumbed, cables run, and the power unit primed and bled. First lift is empty, then to a test weight we bring, then to the customer’s own vehicle for a live check. We calibrate the lock pawls so both columns click into the same notch and the arms swing free. That last checkout is where you find a bent arm from freight or a miswired sensor.
Buying with future resale in mind
