Start with the Vehicle, Not the Lift
Every good lift decision starts with what you drive and what you want to work on. Our Ames buyer’s daily was a half-ton pickup at around 5,500 pounds. His project was a Chevelle in the mid-3,000s. Neither is a heavy vehicle. That immediately opens the door to the 9,000- and 10,000-pound home-garage class of two-posts and four-posts. If your daily is a three-quarter-ton diesel at 8,000-plus pounds or you plan to work on a dually, you need to step up to 12,000-pound capacity, which changes the model list. Write down every vehicle you will realistically put on the lift over ten years. Include the family SUV your spouse drives. That short list determines capacity, which determines model shortlist. If you skip this step, you may end up with a lift that fits your project car and not your daily. That is a common regret we hear.
Two-Post, Four-Post, or Scissor
Restoration and metal work push toward a two-post because you want the wheels hanging and full access to the underside for welding, cleaning, and paint. Storage pushes toward a four-post because you can park a second car underneath. Oil changes and quick service push toward a scissor. He can pull wheels for suspension rebuilds, weld undercarriage, and hang the car for undercoating. When the Chevelle is done, we will move it to a four-post for long-term storage. Concrete, Ceiling, and Power in Ames
Ames-area home garages built after 2000 usually have four- to five-inch slabs at around 3,500 to 4,000 PSI. That is compatible with most home-grade two-posts, which typically require 4-1/4 inches at 3,000 PSI minimum. Older Ames garages, especially those with poured slabs from the 1970s and earlier, can be thinner and softer. We core-test before install if we have any doubt. Total recurring parts spend is not huge if the lift is properly maintained. Improperly maintained lifts cost more because a cable failure can damage a car or an operator, and neither is a bill anyone wants to pay. Add annual inspection — we do a home-garage annual for a modest flat rate that includes cable tension, anchor torque, lock function, and hydraulic condition. Over twenty years the total cost of ownership on a well-chosen BendPak or Atlas home lift is dominated by the initial purchase, not by parts. That is the case for buying quality up front.
Restoration and Metal Work Considerations
If you weld under a lift, buy weld-safe drip trays or use a fireproof welding blanket on the columns during work. Sparks landing on a hydraulic hose are the sort of thing that ends badly. If you cut, blow the shop out afterward — steel dust settles on lift columns and hides rust. If you paint or undercoat, mask the columns. None of this makes a home garage lift the wrong choice for a restoration project. It just means treat the lift like the shop tool it is, not like a piece of furniture.
