Auto Lifts for Home Garage: A Collector’s First-Year Ownership Story

A collector in northwest Iowa bought auto lifts for home garage use to keep six vehicles rotating through his shop for maintenance and long-term storage. This is his first-year ownership story, from install day through his first warranty question. Auto lifts for home garage use in a collector context is less about weekly wrenching and more about accessible, safe, ergonomic storage plus periodic service — differential fluid, timing belts, brake bleeds, and the endless small tasks a collection generates. Here is what year one taught him, and what we noticed as his installer looking in.

Install Day and the First Impression

His shop was a purpose-built collector barn in northwest Iowa, six-inch slab, 14-foot walls, dedicated 200-amp service, radiant floor heat. Textbook. We installed two four-post storage lifts side by side. Install ran clean and finished in a day. His first reaction: the lifts were quieter than he expected and the safety locks were louder than he expected. Both of those things are good. A quiet motor means well-machined internals. Loud safety locks mean the pawls engage positively and audibly, so you know when the lift is on locks and when it is not. He drove a mid-90s German sedan onto one and a 1980s American convertible onto the other on day one, and both cars have been on those lifts for the majority of the year since. Auto lifts for home garage collectors are quality-of-life upgrades, but you feel that quality on day one, not five years in.

The First Differential Fluid Service

About three months into ownership, he pulled the German sedan down to change differential fluid. The four-post gives you full underbody access from directly below — you slide a drain pan onto the drip trays, remove the fill and drain plugs, and let it flow. He mentioned that on his previous jack-stand method the same job used to take him two hours and leave his back sore. On the lift it took forty minutes and he stood up the whole time. The value of that time and comfort compounds over a collection. Six vehicles times two hours saved per service times three services a year equals real time. Owning a lift is not just about the marquee jobs. It is about the small ones happening more often because they are no longer painful.

The First Warranty Question

Around month five, one of his safety pawls started sticking on release. The lift would raise fine but the pawl on the driver-side front column would not disengage cleanly on the first pull of the release cable. This is a warranty-covered issue on a new lift. He called us, described it, and we walked through diagnostics on the phone. The pawl spring had come loose at one anchor point — a manufacturing defect, not user error. We ordered a replacement spring assembly under warranty, had it in stock at our Ames warehouse, and shipped it that afternoon. He installed it himself with a photo guide we emailed him and the lift was back in full service within a week. That is what a working warranty looks like: fast diagnosis, part in stock, install support, no fight over whether it counts.

How Warranty Claim Workflow Actually Works

Every manufacturer we work with has a warranty process that starts with the dealer, not the factory. You call us. We diagnose. We open the claim with the manufacturer using serial numbers we have on file from your original purchase. We ship the part, either from our stock or from the manufacturer’s regional warehouse. In most cases the customer never talks to the factory. If your dealer disappears after the sale, you have to run the warranty process yourself, which is slower and more frustrating. That is a real reason to buy from a dealer who is going to be there in five and ten years. We keep serials on file for every lift we sell, so if you lose the paperwork we can still open a claim. It is a small thing that matters when it matters.

What Six Months of Storage Taught Him

He rotates cars off the lifts every few months. Six months in, we noticed his floor drip trays had collected surprisingly little fluid — modern cars just do not leak much when they are healthy. What did accumulate was dust. He was running an oil-fired heater and the fine dust settled on everything above head height. He upgraded to a shop air filtration unit and the problem largely disappeared. If your storage lifts sit in a heated shop with a combustion heater, budget for a filtration solution. It is not a lift problem, but it is a lift-adjacent problem you will notice when your cars are up high and dusty. Auto lifts for home garage collectors deserve the shop conditions to match. See our four-post storage lift guide.

Year-End Maintenance and the Ninety-Day Follow-Up

We came back at ninety days for our standard follow-up. Anchor torque was within spec on both lifts. Cable tension had settled slightly, as it always does, and we retensioned. Hydraulic reservoir levels were full. Pawl geometry was clean after the warranty part swap. At the one-year mark we came back for the annual inspection and did the same checklist plus a full pump-condition inspection. That is what maintenance looks like on a well-installed lift: predictable, brief, and covered under a service agreement if you want one. If you own multiple lifts, we bundle annuals into a single visit. That saves you money and us drive time.

What He Would Do Differently in Year Two

Two things, both small. He wished he had ordered longer drip trays from the start, because his oil filter locations on two of the collection cars are behind the standard tray length. Easy fix, we can ship longer trays anytime. And he wished he had gone with the wider column spacing option on one of the lifts because his convertible has wide-swinging doors. Neither issue is a regret about the lifts themselves. They are the sort of small optimizations that come with a year of use. If you buy auto lifts for home garage collector duty, we will walk you through those options up front. Call 800-674-9302. Also see our annual inspection checklist.
