We talked with an owner last fall who was rebuilding front-end suspension and swapping shocks on his own service trucks, and he wanted a permanent lift in his personal shop rather than paying a bay elsewhere. This piece walks through the two configurations we compared side by side for him, the concrete slab thickness and rebar math we actually ran, and why one option ended up winning for this specific workload.

What “Home Garage” Really Means for a Working Fleet

When a small-fleet operator asks us about auto lifts for home garage installation, we push back on the term almost immediately. A home garage that services three or four vans and pickups every week isn’t really a home garage — it’s a light-commercial shop with a residential address. That distinction matters because the duty cycle changes everything. The anchors get pulled harder, the cylinders see more cycles, and the cable equalizers wear faster than any weekend hobbyist would ever see. Our Dubuque customer runs a two-truck outfit servicing HVAC accounts across eastern Iowa. His trucks get front suspension work every forty thousand miles on average, and he’d rather do it at home than lose a day paying a shop. That’s ten to fifteen full lift cycles a month, on top of oil changes, brake jobs, and the occasional differential swap. We priced this out as a light-commercial application, not residential, and we told him to think about warranty terms the same way. The gap between a three-year residential warranty and a five-year light-commercial warranty is worth real money when the columns are cycling that often.

Configuration A: BendPak 4-Post With Rolling Jacks

The first configuration we priced for him was a BendPak 4-post rated at ten thousand pounds, paired with a set of sliding rolling jacks. This is the classic home-garage setup for someone who wants to store a car on top and work under another one on the ground, and it’s the layout we quote most often to owners doing their own maintenance. For suspension work specifically, the rolling jacks are what earn the config its keep — they let you take the wheels off the ramps and hang the axle in the air, which is exactly what shock replacement demands. The trade-off is footprint. A four-post eats a lot of floor even when it’s in the air. His pole building has a thirty-by-forty footprint with room for two bays and a bench, and the 4-post narrowed the walking room around the truck. On the plus side, the anchor requirement is essentially zero — the whole thing sits on the slab and stays put by its own weight. We could have installed it on his existing floor without pulling a single anchor.

Configuration B: Rotary SPO10 2-Post Symmetric

The second configuration was a Rotary SPO10 two-post rated at the same ten thousand pounds, but with symmetric arms and floor-plate design. This lift wins the wheel-service argument hands down. There are no ramps in the way, no runways to work around, and the arms swing out of the way when you’re dropping struts. The catch is what it demands of the concrete underneath. Rotary calls for four inches of properly cured concrete at three thousand PSI minimum for the SPO10, and the anchor pattern needs full bite in solid slab. For our small-fleet operator’s daily suspension work, this was easily the better lift on the tools side. But the storage question — he wanted to keep a second vehicle underneath his own driver — got harder. You can’t park under a two-post the same way you can under a four-post. The lift comes back down at the end of every job, and the truck sits on the floor. So we had to weigh working comfort against storage capability, and that’s where the decision got interesting.

Concrete Slab Thickness and Rebar — The Real Numbers

Here’s the section owners always want and rarely get straight answers on. His pole building had a four-inch slab poured in the early 2000s, unreinforced, with fiber mesh mixed in. That’s a fine slab for a light-duty four-post — the load is spread across four wide footprints and nothing is trying to yank concrete upward. For the two-post, though, we had reservations. When a two-post is loaded, the anchors on the outside edge of each column are in tension. They’re trying to lift the concrete off the ground. On a four-inch slab with no rebar, that’s a coin flip at best when a full-sized service truck is hanging in the arms. The safe answer for a two-post carrying real fleet weight is a fresh six-inch pad at four thousand PSI with rebar on twelve-inch centers, or at minimum a cut-and-pour of two four-by-four-foot column pads to that spec. We priced both options for him. The pad-only pour ran under a full slab replacement, which changed the total project cost enough to matter.

Why Suspension and Shock Work Changes the Lift Math

Suspension work is one of the few jobs where the choice between a two-post and a four-post genuinely changes the tool math. On a four-post with rolling jacks, you drive up, set your parking brake, then position the rolling jack under the cross-member or subframe and lift the axle off the runway. That works — but the jack takes up floor space under the vehicle, and it’s an extra tool to store, service, and eventually replace when the seals give out. On a two-post, the arms cradle the pinch welds or the frame, and the wheels hang naturally in the air the second the lift comes up. Nothing between you and the strut. For a fleet doing repeated suspension jobs on the same trucks, the two-post shaves ten to fifteen minutes per corner just in setup. Over a year of ten cycles a month, that’s a real number. It’s also easier on your back because the working height stays where you want it without repositioning tools. That’s the argument that pushed our Dubuque customer toward configuration B.

Power, Ceiling, and Bay Width Considerations

Power was the easy part. Both lifts run on 220 single-phase, and his shop already had a fifty-amp subpanel with room to add a dedicated twenty-amp circuit. His twelve-foot side walls gave him roughly eleven feet of usable ceiling under the trusses. That’s enough for both configurations to fully deploy, but only barely on the two-post when the overhead shutoff bar is factored in. We measured his tallest truck at eighty-two inches to the roof, so we had six-plus feet of working room over the vehicle with the two-post fully raised — plenty for suspension work and even for exhaust jobs. Bay width was the real constraint. His single-bay opening was ten feet wide, which fit a two-post with its columns spanning roughly twelve feet outside-to-outside comfortably, but only if we positioned the columns just inside the door track. A wide-drive-through two-post would have made the columns wider still, so we stuck with the standard SPO10.

What We Installed and Why

He picked configuration B, the Rotary SPO10 symmetric two-post, and we poured two column pads to spec rather than replacing the whole slab. The pad pour ran a Friday afternoon, cured over the weekend, and the lift was installed the following Tuesday. He gave up the storage-a-car-underneath capability, but for a small-fleet operator doing repeated suspension and shock work, that trade-off was easy in hindsight. The two-post shaves setup time on every job, gives him full wheels-free access without a rolling jack in the way, and lets him do brake work and driveline inspection cleanly. If you’re weighing the same two-configuration decision — 4-post-with-rolling-jacks versus 2-post — the honest answer depends on whether storage matters more than working efficiency. For a hobbyist storing a collector car, the four-post usually wins. For a working fleet doing real suspension cycles, the two-post pays for itself in saved minutes and cleaner access.
