Auto lifts for home garage use aren’t just for hobbyists. Some of the busiest lifts we install go in the home shops of mobile mechanics — one-truck operations who spend their days at customers’ driveways and need a real bay of their own for the jobs mobile can’t handle. Oil pan gaskets, timing covers, rear main seals, transmission service — none of it happens on gravel next to a customer’s garage. Last spring we installed a two-post in West Des Moines for exactly that use case. This is the story of that install, the symmetric-versus-asymmetric decision we made, and six months of real use as a mobile tech’s home base.

Why a Mobile Tech Needs a Home Bay

A mobile mechanic spends the day doing brake pads in driveways, replacing batteries in parking lots, and handling anything that can be done with hand tools and a floor jack. What can’t be done in the field is the same short list every mobile guy runs into: anything requiring the vehicle in the air for more than twenty minutes, anything involving fluids that need containment, and anything that would leave the customer without a vehicle for a full workday. Those jobs either go to a friend’s shop for a favor, get referred out, or get done at the tech’s own place. Building a home bay closes that gap. Our West Des Moines customer had been referring out oil pan gasket jobs, timing cover work, and clutch replacements for two years. Every referred job was margin walking out the door. He calculated that installing a two-post at home would pay for itself in about eight months if he kept even half the jobs he’d been sending elsewhere.

The West Des Moines Install We Did Last Spring

His shop is a detached two-and-a-half-car garage behind his house, roughly twenty-four by twenty-four with a nine-and-a-half-foot ceiling. Tight, but workable. Slab was five inches, poured when the garage was built, and it tested at over four thousand PSI. Perfect for a two-post. We spec’d a Challenger CL10 ten-thousand-pound low-ceiling model — the low-ceiling designation matters because it drops the overhead crossbar into a shorter geometry and buys about six inches of vertical room at full extension. On his ceiling, that six inches was the difference between working comfortably under a mid-sized SUV and hitting the crossbar. We anchored the columns with the manufacturer-specified wedge anchors, torqued to spec, and had the lift operational the same afternoon we started. He was working on a customer car by the following morning. Total downtime for his mobile business: less than a full day.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric — What Matters for Oil Pan Work

Between symmetric and asymmetric, we ended up on symmetric for his use case. The oil pan gasket job is what tipped the decision. On symmetric arms, the vehicle sits centered between the columns and the entire underside — including the oil pan directly below the engine — is unobstructed. On an asymmetric layout, the short front arms swing back toward the columns, and the front arm pads can end up sitting close to the oil pan area on some engine layouts. Not blocking, but close. For a job like an oil pan gasket where you’re lowering the pan straight down and needing clear vertical room to slide it out, the symmetric geometry gives cleaner access every time. He also does exhaust work, driveline work, and rear main seals — all jobs where symmetric’s clear underside pays off. If most of his work had been under-hood, we might have leaned asymmetric for the door-swing benefit, but the underside-heavy job mix argued for symmetric.

Getting the Pan Off Without Fighting the Arms

Oil pan gasket work has a specific rhythm on a two-post. First you drain the oil, then unbolt the pan bolts around the perimeter, then break the RTV seal without prying too hard against the block. The pan usually needs to be lowered straight down before it can be slid out. On some engines the pan is small enough to come out over the crossmember. On others — most modern V6 and V8 layouts — the pan is larger than the crossmember gap and requires either raising the engine slightly or lowering the crossmember. Working on a symmetric two-post gives you clean straight-down access to the pan bolts and clean straight-down clearance for the pan to drop. Nothing overhead in the way, nothing under the pinch welds crowding your work area. He’s done four oil pan gaskets in six months on this lift. Every one of them went cleaner than the same job at a customer’s garage on jack stands. The lift paid for a real percentage of itself in those four jobs alone.

Concrete, Power, and What He Skipped

The install was straightforward because the fundamentals were already there. Five-inch slab, sufficient PSI, 220-volt service already wired to the garage from an earlier air compressor project, and a bay wide enough to fit the columns with door clearance on both sides. What he skipped was the lighting and ventilation upgrades that would have made the space more comfortable. He still uses drop lights and an open overhead door for ventilation instead of adding under-hood LEDs and an exhaust fan. Those are on his list for year two. He also skipped the truck adapters upfront, which he regretted the first time a customer brought a body-on-frame pickup. Truck adapters cost less than a good set of jack stands and turn the two-post from a passenger-car lift into a light-truck lift. Anyone speccing auto lifts for home garage use should add the truck adapters at purchase — it’s a one-time cost that removes a future problem.

Six Months of Use: The Honest Report

Six months in, the lift has run essentially maintenance-free. He greases the arm pivots monthly, checks the cable tension quarterly, and inspects the safety locks visually before every use. The hydraulic reservoir has stayed topped off with the manufacturer-specified fluid. The only real issue has been a slow drift in one column’s lock engagement — one of the pawl springs was slightly weaker from the factory than the others, and it took an extra pound of finger pressure to disengage. We swapped the spring during a routine visit; ten-minute fix. The economics of the install are what he’s tracked most carefully. He’s kept every oil pan, timing cover, and rear main job that used to get referred out, and his gross margin on those jobs is significantly higher than his margin on brake pads and batteries in the field. He estimates the lift pays for itself somewhere between month seven and month nine.

If You’re a One-Bay Mobile Tech

If you’re a mobile mechanic weighing auto lifts for home garage use, the math almost always works if you’re currently referring out big jobs. Count the jobs you send elsewhere in a month. Multiply by your average margin on those jobs. Compare to a monthly financing payment on a quality two-post plus install. If you’re referring out even two jobs a month, the payment covers itself. Practical considerations: your ceiling probably works fine with a low-ceiling configuration. Your slab probably works if it’s four inches or more at three thousand PSI. Your bay width matters less than you think as long as you can fit the columns and open the doors.
