We had a car restoration shop owner near Bloomfield call last spring about a lift for his personal shop, where he was doing an annual state-inspection prep on customer classics during the winter off-season and his own project the rest of the year. The core geometry of symmetric versus asymmetric

Symmetric arms on a two-post lift are the same length front and back. The vehicle sits centered between the two columns, with roughly equal distance from the driver door to the driver-side column and from the passenger door to the passenger-side column. Asymmetric arms are shorter in the rear than the front, which lets the vehicle sit six to twelve inches behind the column centerline, opening up more door swing clearance on both sides. That geometric difference is small on paper and enormous in practice.

When you park a full-size sedan on a symmetric lift and open the driver door, the door often stops short against the column before it reaches its normal full-open position. When you park the same sedan on an asymmetric lift, the door clears the column with room to spare. For customers who load and unload the vehicle repeatedly during a service session, and especially for classic cars whose doors are heavier and swing wider than modern cars, that clearance changes the experience of using the lift. Weight distribution: where symmetric still wins

Symmetric arms center the vehicle’s center of gravity between the columns, which loads both columns equally. Asymmetric arms shift the center of gravity slightly toward the front column, which loads the front more than the rear. On a properly rated lift, both configurations are entirely safe, and the rated capacity accounts for the asymmetric loading. But for very heavy vehicles, or for vehicles with unusual weight distribution such as an engine-forward truck or a rear-engine sports car, the loading pattern matters.

For a truck-heavy shop, we sometimes lean symmetric because heavy trucks want the column loading balanced and the arms distributing weight evenly. For a car-heavy shop, especially one with mixed classic and modern cars, we lean asymmetric because the door-clearance benefit is worth more than the small loading asymmetry. Our Bloomfield-area buyer’s fleet skewed heavily toward passenger cars, both classic and modern, with only occasional pickup work. Versymmetric: the hybrid option and when it makes sense

Some newer two-post designs offer what the industry calls a versymmetric configuration, which is a set of arms that can be swung to a symmetric or an asymmetric position depending on the vehicle being lifted. The mechanism is a set of extended-swing front arms that reach further forward when needed and retract when not. The trade-off is a slightly higher cost and a slightly more complex arm-pin engagement than either pure geometry.

For a shop with a genuinely mixed fleet, versymmetric is worth the small premium. Our Bloomfield buyer eventually chose a versymmetric configuration, because the same lift needed to hold a two-thousand-pound British roadster with narrow doors that never came close to the columns, and a four-thousand-five-hundred-pound American cruiser with doors that swept wide. Versymmetric let him position each vehicle optimally without switching arms. Arm pads and adapters: the accessory that unlocks the lift

Regardless of arm geometry, the pad and adapter set on the arms determines what vehicles the lift can safely engage. Standard rubber pads work fine for modern unibody cars with well-defined pinch-weld pickup points. Frame-cradle adapters work better for full-frame vehicles, including most classic American cars and modern trucks. Tall pin extensions work for lifted trucks and for classics with unusually high rocker points. The right adapter set is a small percentage of the total lift cost, and it multiplies the range of vehicles the lift can service.

Our Bloomfield buyer’s fleet needed at least three adapter types: rubber pads for the modern cars in the shop, frame-cradle adapters for the American classics, and a pair of tall pin extensions for the occasional early truck. We spec’d the adapter set to match his fleet at delivery, and he added one more accessory two years later when he took on a project car with an unusual rocker geometry. Annual state inspections and lift height requirements

Iowa does not require annual vehicle safety inspections for privately owned passenger cars, but many customers along the border cross into Missouri or bring in classics that need documentation for insurance, registration, or club events. An annual state inspection typically requires the vehicle to be at full lift height for a thorough undercarriage check, brake line and fuel line inspection, and exhaust review. The Bloomfield buyer used his lift for the winter inspection season, when local classic-car owners brought their cars over for a pre-registration review before spring shows. He needed the lift at full extension for a full undercarriage walkaround, and asymmetric or versymmetric arm geometry did not affect that height because both configurations reach the same maximum. What did matter was the safety-lock spacing at the top of the travel, so he could hold the car precisely at his most comfortable inspection height rather than dangling at whichever lock happened to catch. The versymmetric geometry gave him flexibility across his mixed fleet, and the ten-thousand-pound capacity gave him headroom above every vehicle he currently services with room for a heavier project car if he ever takes one on. Install ran one day with a two-person crew, and he was inspecting cars for spring registration season by early April.
