An EV specialty shop owner up in Sioux City called us this spring convinced he could not run a real lift out of his home garage because the internet had told him three things: EVs are too heavy for a home lift, the slab has to be new, and CV axle work needs a scissor. All three are wrong or half-wrong, and we hear the same myths every week when people start shopping auto lifts for home garage use. His call turned into a two-hour site survey and a two-post install four weeks later. Here are the myths we walked him through, in the order they come up on almost every home garage buyer call we take.

Myth: EVs Are Too Heavy For A Home Garage Lift

Modern EVs run heavier than the ICE version of the same body by 800 to 1,500 pounds, sometimes 2,000 on a full-size truck. That sounds like a barrier until you look at the numbers. A Tesla Model Y curb weighs around 4,400 pounds. A Rivian R1T is about 7,100. A Ford F-150 Lightning is 6,500 to 6,900. A 10,000-pound two-post handles all of those with margin. Even a 9,000-pound BendPak XPR-9S or Rotary SPO10 has headroom for a Model Y with a bike rack loaded.

Where you actually need to think is on the trucks. A loaded Lightning with a slide-in bed camper is climbing into the 8,000-pound range with weight bias toward the rear axle where the battery sits. For a shop that plans to work on EV trucks regularly we recommend the 12,000-pound tier, either a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger CL12. The lift then handles anything a home shop sees, ICE or EV. The only equipment that is genuinely unfriendly to a home two-post is a full-size class-A motorhome, and those are not what our EV-shop caller was chasing.

Myth: The Slab Has To Be Brand New

Manufacturer specs read four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and buyers see that and assume any older slab is disqualified. In practice most Iowa home garage slabs from the 1980s onward are four inches of at least 3,000 PSI, sometimes six inches of 3,500. The right move is to check, not to guess. We bring a core drill on a site survey when the owner is not sure. Ten minutes and a two-inch plug tells you exactly what the pad is.

If the slab is thin or the mix is soft, the fix is not a rebuild. We cut two column-sized pads down to grade, pour thickened footings four to five feet square with rebar, and match the finish level back to the surrounding slab. That gives a home garage lift the anchor holding power of a commercial shop floor and costs less than the lift itself. In Sioux City our caller had a 1998 slab that turned out to be five inches of 3,500 PSI, no repair needed. His whole worry evaporated in the first hour of the site survey. That is the pattern almost every time.

Myth: CV Axle Work Needs A Scissor

Mid-rise scissors have a place. They are portable and cheap and they let you rotate tires without a fixed install. They are not the right primary lift for a CV axle or half-shaft job. To pull an axle you want the wheels hanging free at full droop and clear access to the transmission-side flange, the intermediate shaft carrier bearing, and the boot at the knuckle. A scissor supports the pinch welds and leaves the wheels resting on the ground. A two-post picks the car up by the frame and lets the axles drop.

On EV drive units the story is worse for scissors. The half-shafts on a Model Y or an EV6 pass under a battery pack that hangs the whole width of the underbody. A scissor blocks the working area entirely. A two-post frees the entire lower half of the vehicle, which is what a serious EV service program needs. For our Sioux City caller a Rotary SPOA10 two-post was the obvious answer, and adding a low-profile floor jack and a set of transmission stands rounded out the tool budget for drive-unit and half-shaft work.

Myth: You Need 14 Feet Of Ceiling

Full-rise two-post lifts want about 11 feet 6 inches of clear ceiling to the underside of the lowest structural member. Not 14. Not 12. Standard overhead two-posts have a shutoff bar between the columns near the top; if a raised truck touches the bar, the pump stops. Baseplate two-posts move the equalizer to floor level and are usable in ceilings under 11 feet, at the cost of stepping over a small hump between the columns.

Our Sioux City caller had 10 feet 10 inches to the truss, which put him just under standard clearance for a full-rise overhead. He chose a Challenger baseplate CL10V3 with the low-ceiling package. The lift raises his heaviest planned vehicle, a Rivian R1S, to a working height where he can stand under the front differential without hunching. When people ask us about auto lifts for home garage bays in older buildings, the baseplate versus overhead choice is where the ceiling question gets solved, not by ripping the roof off.

Site Survey: What We Actually Check

A real site survey takes about ninety minutes. We measure the ceiling to the lowest point, both under a truss and along the sidewall, because trusses are rarely dead flat. We check slab thickness with a hammer and a core drill when needed. We look at the door swing, the workbench layout, the location of the electrical panel, and the run for the 220-volt single-phase line the pump needs. Most home garages already have 220 for a welder or an air compressor; if not, an electrician can pull a line for a modest cost.

We also measure the drive path from the door to the lift bay. This gets skipped and it matters. A tight side entry with a workbench along one wall can force the wrong asymmetric orientation, or block door swing on a longer car. We move a mock-up column onto tape marks on the floor so the owner walks the bay before the anchor bolts go in. That is the step that turns a fine install into a great one. Ten dollars of blue tape has saved us six-figure regrets.

What Auto Lifts For Home Garage Use Actually Cost To Install

People shop lift prices online and get sticker shock when the install line lands. Here is the real breakdown. A certified 10,000-pound two-post lands in the mid four figures for the lift itself. Delivery to central and western Iowa runs a few hundred dollars if we deliver instead of ship. Install runs eight hundred to twelve hundred, higher if concrete work is needed or if we have to sleeve an anchor. Electrical, if a 220 line is not already at the bay, adds three to six hundred through a local electrician.

All in, an average install for the Sioux City project came in under six thousand dollars for the equipment and labor combined. Financing through our banker (12 months no interest, first payment deferred 90 days) let the shop start work before month-one payment hit. That timing is what turns a home garage bay into a business decision rather than a cash-flow squeeze. Compare that to leasing shop bay space at even $600 a month, and the lift pays back inside a year. That math is why more Iowa techs run out of their own garages than out of leased space.

Where Sioux City And Western Iowa Fit In Our Service Area
