The two dominant designs are gear-tooth and friction. Friction restraints use a spring-loaded shoe that grips the arm’s rotational shaft, and they wear over time.

Ladder spacing on most commercial-grade two-post lifts is roughly two to two and a half inches, meaning the pawl engages a new lock position every two to two and a half inches of vertical travel.

Practically that means when you raise a vehicle to working height, you release the descent lever to let the pawls drop into the nearest lock position, and the vehicle now sits on mechanical locks rather than hydraulic pressure. Cable stretch across the first year of use is normal and requires a re-tensioning routine at the six-month or one-year mark. Tier-one imports often use generic seal packs with much shorter service life, and by year six you may already be dripping fluid at the rod gland.
