Step 1: What Are You Actually Lifting?
The single most important number in the whole decision is the weight of the heaviest vehicle you plan to lift, plus a safety margin. A stock half-ton pickup runs 5,000 to 5,800 lb. A three-quarter-ton is 6,500 to 7,500. A one-ton dually can push 8,000 or beyond. A mid-size SUV lands around 4,500. A classic muscle car is 3,500 to 4,000. The Minnesota buyer’s heaviest was a stock F-150 at about 5,300 lb. That put him firmly inside a 9K or 10K rating with meaningful margin. If your fleet stays under 6,500 lb loaded, a 9K or 10K is right. Anything heavier, step up to a 12K.
Payload matters too. If you throw firewood or a snowmobile in the bed regularly and then plan to lift the truck, add that weight to the base vehicle. This is where new buyers commonly under-spec — they price against the sticker curb weight and ignore the fact that they actually lift the truck loaded a lot of the time. Below that you are betting on staying under 6,000 lb loaded, and that bet does not always hold up over ten years of ownership.
Step 2: Two-Post, Four-Post, or Scissor?
Two-post lifts pad under the frame or pinch welds. The wheels hang free. This is best for wrenching — brakes, suspension, transmission drops, differential service. Four-post lifts drive the vehicle up on ramps. The wheels stay loaded. Best for storage, alignment prep, and quick jobs where you do not need the wheels off. Scissor and mid-rise lifts raise from the middle of the vehicle. Best for tire and brake work where you only need a foot or two of clearance and you want the fastest cycle time. Each has a legitimate use case for auto lifts for home garage installations.
The Minnesota buyer wanted differential service and restoration work. That is two-post territory, no debate. Storage was secondary — he had room for the Bronco to sit on the shop floor while it was under teardown. If storage had been primary, a four-post would have been the pick. If tire changes had been the only work, a scissor would have covered it at lower cost. Ask yourself: 60 percent of the time, what am I doing? That answer picks the lift type. Do not buy for the once-a-year edge case — buy for the actual routine work.
Step 3: Ceiling Height Decides Overhead vs Baseplate
Overhead two-post lifts run a crossbar between the columns and need roughly 145 inches of ceiling to fit. Baseplate two-posts route the equalizer through the floor and need only about 108 inches. If your ceiling — measured to the bottom of the trusses, with the overhead door in the fully open position — is below 130 inches, you are in baseplate territory. If it is above 145, you have your pick. Anything in between depends on the specific model. Every manufacturer publishes exact overall height. Read it.
The Minnesota buyer had 132 inches to the joist, and his overhead door retracted to 118 inches when open. That put him solidly in the baseplate configuration for any auto lifts for home garage use in his building. He was initially disappointed because forums had told him baseplate was inferior — it is not. It is a Gold-certified configuration used by every major manufacturer, and the only functional difference is that you cannot drive a low sports car straight through the bay. You have to back it out. For a home shop, that is a non-issue. His Bronco does not care which way it exits.
Step 4: Symmetric or Asymmetric Arms?
Symmetric two-post lifts have arms of equal length front and rear. The vehicle sits centered between the columns. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and have shorter front arms and longer rear arms — the vehicle sits with the door post closer to the column, which lets you open the doors wider without hitting the column. For a working shop with tight bays, asymmetric is standard. For a home garage with enough space, symmetric is fine and simpler. Both are Gold-certified and both do the same lifting work.
We recommended the Minnesota buyer go asymmetric anyway. The reason: door clearance matters more at home than people realize. If you plan to keep the doors open for any length of time — like during a restoration project where you might sit inside the Bronco to work on the dash — you want the columns rotated. Symmetric puts the column right where a fully opened door swings. Asymmetric moves it out of the way. For most auto lifts for home garage installs today, asymmetric is the default. It is a small ergonomic upgrade with zero downside.
Step 5: Arm Design and Pad Options
Three-stage arms telescope in three sections and reach both very short and very long. They are the standard for any modern home lift. Two-stage arms are older technology, cheaper, but limit your reach on longer vehicles or wide-frame trucks. Always order three-stage. Pad adaptors are where a lift adapts to different vehicle types. Standard stack pads at three inches cover most passenger cars. Truck-height stack pads at six or seven inches let you clear larger rocker skirts and reach frame contact points. Low-profile pads let you get under sports cars with two inches of ground clearance.
The Minnesota buyer’s Bronco has enough ground clearance that low-profile pads are optional. His F-150 has running boards that intrude on standard pad placement, so truck-height stack pads are near-mandatory. If you buy only the standard pad set that ships with the lift, you will be shopping for accessories within your first month. Build them in from day one. The Bronco restoration work will benefit from having every pad option on the shelf.
Step 6: Brands That Are Actually Worth Buying
For working two-post lifts in a home garage we recommend Rotary and Challenger consistently. Both are ALI Gold, both are made in the US or by US-headquartered manufacturers with strong parts supply, and both have been in the market for decades. For pure home-storage four-posts we recommend BendPak and Atlas — different segment, different pricing, different design goals, and both are quality machines for that specific use. Below those four brands the picture gets muddier fast. Uncertified imports may work for a while, but the parts supply and safety documentation are often not there when you need them.
The Minnesota buyer asked about a specific import brand he had seen on a big online marketplace. We told him honestly: we do not install those, we do not carry parts for them, and the ALI Gold status of specific models is often unclear. Not every online seller is honest about certification. The upfront savings on an import brand rarely survives the first cable replacement or the first insurance question. Buy once, cry once, sleep well.
Step 7: How to Actually Buy the Right One
