ALI stands for the Automotive Lift Institute, and the Gold certification is the industry benchmark for installers — not just manufacturers. A lot of fleet managers assume certification only applies to the lift itself, but the installation process matters just as much. An ALI Gold-certified installer has been trained specifically in anchor bolt torque specs, concrete requirements, load testing, and the manufacturer’s exact installation procedure for that model. For a municipal shop lifting plow trucks and dump trucks for differential fluid service, that distinction is not academic. A lift anchored incorrectly into thin or cracked concrete can shift under an asymmetric load — exactly the kind of load you get when a technician is working underneath one side of a truck draining a differential.

It costs a little more up front but it’s far cheaper than a lift failure. One mistake we see fleet managers make is under-buying lift capacity because they’re thinking about today’s fleet size instead of five years out. Choosing an Installer, Not Just a Lift Brand

Fleet managers often research the lift brand extensively — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — but spend far less time vetting the installer. That’s backwards. The same lift model installed by two different crews can behave completely differently depending on anchor torque, concrete prep, and alignment. Ask any installer bidding your job whether their crew carries current ALI Gold certification and ask to see it. A legitimate installer will have no problem producing it.

We also recommend asking for references from other fleet or commercial accounts specifically, not just residential garage installs, because the load patterns and daily-use intensity are different animals. A lift that’s perfect for a hobbyist’s weekend project car may not hold up under five fleet vehicles a day getting differential service. Vet the installer the same way you’d vet a structural contractor — because functionally, that’s what they are.
