Why a Collector Needed Auto Lifts Installed in the First Place

Most collectors don’t start out planning for a lift. They start out with a barn full of cars and a bad back. In this case, the tipping point was brake work. Rotors on a collector car sitting for months at a time glaze, warp, and rust, and every one of his five vehicles needed pads, rotors, or both by the time he called us. Doing that on jack stands, one corner at a time, for five cars, was going to eat an entire weekend and leave him sore for a week.

We walked the barn, checked ceiling height, and confirmed the concrete was rated for a two-post setup. He didn’t need a four-post storage rack since he wasn’t stacking cars vertically — he needed full wheel access for brake service, so a two-post asymmetric lift made more sense. Install Day: What Actually Happens on Site

For a barn install, we ask the same questions every time: is there a forklift or way to get the crate off a truck, is the floor cured and rated, and is there clear overhead room to raise the columns. This customer had a gravel drive up to a concrete pad, so we scheduled the freight delivery for a morning when the ground was firm and dry. Two-post lifts ship heavy — columns, carriage, cables, and hydraulic unit all come separate — and getting them staged before the crew arrives saves real time.

The actual install took the better part of a day. We anchored the columns, ran the cables through the sheaves, set the equalizer cable tension, and tested the safety locks on both sides before wet-testing with an empty carriage, then again with a vehicle. We also walked him through the arm restraints and the lock release, since most first-time owners have never operated a two-post before. By early evening the lift was cycling smooth and level, and he had his first car — a low sedan — up on the arms before we packed the truck. That’s the standard when we get auto lifts installed correctly the first time: no callbacks for uneven columns or slow cycling.

The First Brake and Rotor Job on the New Lift

His first real job was the daily driver — pads and rotors all around, plus a caliper that had been dragging. With the car at full height and both wheels off, he had access he’d never had on stands: he could walk around the vehicle, use a rolling stool, and get the impact wrench square on every lug without fighting an angle. He told us afterward it took him about a third of the time compared to doing it on the ground with a floor jack and stands.

That’s the real payoff for a collector doing his own brake service — not just comfort, but consistency. Rotors seat evenly when you can spin the wheel freely and check runout at full lift height. Calipers bleed cleaner when the car’s level and stable instead of teetering on stands. Over the following two months he ran the same routine on three more cars in the collection, and each job got faster as he got comfortable with the arm positions and lock heights for each specific chassis.

Cable Inspection: The Part Nobody Thinks About Until Something Feels Off

Two-post lifts hold vehicles up with cables and an equalizer system, and those cables are wear items — not lifetime parts. We told him at install that a visual check every time he uses the lift costs nothing: look for fraying, flat spots, or rust bloom where the cable runs through the sheave. Around month six, doing his own once-over before a rotor job, he noticed slight fraying near one of the carriage connection points on a cable that saw the most cycles because that side handled his heaviest vehicle.

We walked him through what that meant on the phone before he ever touched a wrench. Fraying at a connection point isn’t cause for panic, but it is the exact signal cables give before they need replacement, and it’s not something to ride out until it fails. For a lift used a few times a week doing brake jobs, we generally recommend a full cable inspection at six-month intervals, tightening up to quarterly once a lift crosses a year or two in service or if it’s holding heavier vehicles regularly. He ordered a replacement set through us, and swapping cables on a two-post is routine work — releasing tension, feeding new cable through the sheaves, and resetting equalizer tension evenly on both sides so the platforms stay level.

What We Look For When Cables Need Replacing Sooner

Not every collector garage sees the same wear pattern. A car that sits for months and then gets lifted, lowered, lifted, lowered repeatedly during a detail session puts more cycles on cable than a daily-driver shop lift running steady eight-hour days. We told him the honest answer: cycle count matters more than calendar time, but calendar time is the easier thing for an owner to track, so we default to time-based checks and adjust based on what we see.

Rust is the other variable specific to barn installs. Even a heated barn sees humidity swings through an Iowa winter, and cables exposed to that moisture over years corrode faster than cables in a climate-controlled shop. We recommend collectors in unheated or lightly heated spaces knock a couple months off whatever inspection interval we’d normally suggest, and to wipe cables down periodically if the space gets damp. It’s a small habit that adds years to service life and keeps the lift’s safety margins where they belong.

Scheduling Ongoing Service for a Home Collection

One thing that surprised him after the install was how much of his brake and rotor work became routine once the lift was in place. He started keeping a simple log — date, vehicle, mileage, and what he checked on the lift itself — the same habit we recommend for any owner running a home garage lift regularly. It doesn’t need to be complicated, just consistent enough that if a cable, hose, or bearing starts wearing sooner than expected, there’s a record to compare against.

We also set him up on a rough service rhythm: annual full inspection covering cables, hydraulic fluid, arm pins, and safety locks, with a self-check every few months in between. For a garage with multiple vehicles getting rotated through brake service the way his does, that rhythm keeps small issues from becoming downtime. He’s since referred two other collectors in the area who wanted the same setup, which is honestly how most of our central Iowa garage installs happen — one owner talks to the next.

What This First Year Taught Him About Lift Ownership

By the end of year one, he’d run all five vehicles through brake or rotor service on the lift, replaced one cable set proactively, and never had a safety lock issue or uneven cycle. That’s the outcome we aim for with every collector who calls us: not just getting auto lifts installed and walking away, but making sure the owner understands the maintenance rhythm well enough to catch problems early. A two-post lift is simple machinery, but cables, hydraulic seals, and safety locks are all wear items that need eyes on them.

For collectors specifically, we tell people the same thing every time: the lift pays for itself in saved weekends the first year, but it only stays safe and smooth if somebody actually looks at the cables on a schedule instead of waiting for a problem to announce itself. His fraying cable never became a failure because he caught it during a routine check, ordered the part, and had it swapped before it mattered. That’s the whole goal.
